Awards

The 2018 Toronto Book Awards is open for submissions of books featuring Toronto content published between June 1, 2017 and May 31, 2018 through April 30. Ebooks and self-published works are not eligible.

The Little, Brown Emerging Artist Award is accepting applications through May 15. Submit mock-ups of picture books featuring a diverse narrative for a chance to receive $1500 in American Express giftcards, a round trip ticket to New York, and a one-day mentorship with Little, Brown Books for Young Readers’ professional children’s book design and editorial team and distinguished Artist Mentor Grace Lin.

Nominations from pros and fans are open for the 2018 Ringo Awards through May 30. Read here to learn more about which comics can be nominated.

The Broken Pencil Zine Awards are accepting submissions of zines, comics, and micro-journals through July 1. There is a submission fee of $25 for the first zine submitted and $10 for zines thereafter, with a maximum of three zine submissions per person, and it includes a year subscription to Broken Pencil Magazine.

Crowdfunded Projects

Comic artist Emily Ree is raising funds on Kickstarter to produce ANARCHY DREAMERS Volume 1 & 2. After a school of 170 students is mysteriously killed and resurrected, they work together to defeat the living Nightmares that plague the world and unravel the mystery of their deaths… and their new lives. Both volumes of Anarchy Dreamers will feature full color comic pages and over 30 pages of bonus content, including guests comics and character bios. Tier options include digital and physical copies of both books, bookmarks, mini prints, stickers, and more. The Kickstarter ends on May 3.

Jamila Rowser is raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Wash Day, a slice-of-life comic that follows the Sunday rituals of Kimana, a Black woman living in the Bronx, and of her room mate Cookie. To quote the campaign, “Wash Day is a slice-of-life comic that pays tribute to the beauty and endurance of Black women and their hair.” The Kickstarter has met its goal, but has a stretch goal for a Spanish translation of the book. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the comic, stickers, commissions, original comic pages, and more. The Kickstarter ends on May 4.

Adorned by Chi is raising funds on Kickstarter to produce their multimedia graphic novel set in Nigeria inspired by the magical girl genre and Igbo mythology. Each character will receive their own animated magical transformation as well as original music. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, a cell phone background, an enamel pin, a sticker sheet, a comic cameo, and a chat with Adorned by Chi creator Jacque Aye!. The Kickstarter ends on May 5.

POMEgranate Magazine is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce their first anthology project GROUP CHAT – A comics anthology about friendship. Group Chat features nearly 200 pages of comics about friendships and found family from 24 creators. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, a digital wallpaper, and digital and physical copies of other books from the POME Collection. The Kickstarter ends on May 9.

Family Style: An AAPI Food Anthology is raising funds on IndieGogo to pay its contributors, support its production, and ship the anthology. The 44-page anthology features Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander contributors and their illustrations and abridged histories of AAPI foods. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the zine, prints, a commission, and a photography session. The campaign ends on May 15.

Comic artist Indira J is raising funds on Kickstarter to produce The Misadventures of Buddy and Friend – Volume 1. The Misadventures of Buddy and Friend is a dark comedy that follows three “heroes” as they pursue a quest to locate the the keys to an inter-dimensional axe and seal away the evil demon lord, Emperor Gingersnap. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the first volume, digital wallpapers, magnetic bookmarks, pinback buttons, prints, stickers, and more. The Kickstarter ends on May 17.

• StArt Faire is accepting exclusive comics, one-shots, light novels, articles, tutorials, and more for their 26th issue until April 29.
• Stim is seeking pitches from autistic writers and artists through April 30. Short fiction, creative nonfiction, essays, illustrations, and comics are welcome. Contributors will be paid £150.
• The Hooker’s Ball, a Bay area fundraiser supporting sex workers and Red Light Legal, is accepting artwork and merchandise from sex workers through May 1.
• The Lauren Child Poetry Illustration Prize is accepting submissions from illustrators age 18-25 through May 1. Illustrate a poem by a Betjeman Poetry Prize finalist for a chance to win £1000.
• Volume 5 of the Object Head Zine, with theme Superstitions: Good Luck/Bad Luck, is accepting applications from illustrators and comic artists through May 2. Accepted artists will be paid $100 CAD (about $80 USD) per page.
• Threadless is accepting artwork for the following design challenges: Faux Music, due May 4, and Hats 2, due May 11.
• The Chubby Anthology is accepting submissions for their fifth volume through May 8.
• The European Comic Schools Contest 2018 is accepting submissions of illustrations and one-shot comics from students of European schools teaching comics, digital art, and/or illustration. Entries are due May 10. Winners may win 200-1000 €, a Wacom Intuos tablet, and copies of Clip Studio Paint.
• The University of Leicester – Wellcome Trust ISSF is seeking contributors to their “Missing Panels” zine by May 23. Selected contributors will be paid up to £350 for 4 pages and £175 for 2 pages of full-color comics and will also receive 25 copies of the zine.
• The Silent Manga Audition is accepting submissions to their extra contest “WASAMON – Give it a try!” through May 31. Black and white comics of 1-17 pages or black and white or color illustrations may be submitted for a chance at cash prizes.
• The 12th Annual International Manga Award is accepting submissions of manga through June 15. Winners will receive a ten-day trip to Japan for the award ceremony.
• SacAnime is hosting two art contests – one for the program cover/badge art, and another for a t-shirt design. Entries are due by July 1, and selected winners will receive a free badge, artist alley table, and helper badge for the 2019 Winter convention.

• Aspect: A Homestuck Zine is accepting applications from artists through April 30. Selected artists will receive a physical copy of the book as well as a $35 payment. Their individual illustrations will be sold on the ForFansByFans store, though artists will receive “full commission for merchandise sales made that feature their zine artwork outside of the zine itself.”
• Run, Youth!! A Golden Kamuy-themed fanbook is accepting applicantions from illustrators and comic artists through April 30.
• Shattered: A Houseki no Kuni Fanzine is accepting applications from artists through May 1. Profits will be split between contributors.
• The HQ! Mythology Zine is accepting applications from artists and writers through May 4. The zine will be sold digitally and profits will be split between contributors.

Mentorships & Fellowships

The PEN America Writing for Justice Fellowship will begin accepting submissions on April 15 through July 1. The six writers selected will receive $10,000 each with the option to request up to $5000 more for travel and research so that they may create works of lasting merit that illuminate critical issues related to mass incarceration and catalyze public debate.

(Minneapolis, MN) Graywolf Press is accepting applications for their Citizen Literary Fellowship through May 4. The fellowship requires close work with the editorial and marketing departments, and “is a part-time (24 hours per week), non-exempt ten-month position with a start date in September 2018. Compensation includes $20,000 (paid twice monthly as regular wages), paid time off, and health and dental insurance.”

The Representation Matters Mentorship Program is accepting applications on a rolling basis from self-identified people of color interested in the publishing industry. Mentorships will last 6 months, with a minimum of one session every two months.

Residencies, Retreats, and Workshops

The Toronto Public Library system is seeking a Canadian romance writer with at least 2 published books for their Fall Writer-in-Residence Program at North York Central Library. Apply by May 11 for consideration.

The Customs House in Brenton, Nova Scotia is seeking seven craft artists in residence.

Scholarships, Sponsorships, and Grants

• The Still I Rise Grant for Black American women writers is accepting applications through April 30. Recipients will receive $100 and publication opportunities from Alternating Current Press.
• The Noemi Press Book Awards for poetry and prose are accepting submissions through May 1. Two prizes of $1000 each will be given to award recipients.
• Art for Science Rising is awarding grants of $10,000 to artists with proposals for public-facing art that highlights the importance of science. Apply with a proposal by May 15 for consideration. Up to $50,000 total will be awarded.
• The Emerging Writers Contest is accepting submissions from unpublished authors through May 15. The winner in each genre will receive $2000 and two copies of the issue their work is featured in. There is $24 entry fee.
• Getty Images, in Partnership with the ARRAY Alliance, is offering the ARRAY Grant for photographers and film makers “who capture the visual narrative of underrepresented ethnic communities and use their medium to progress visual representation.” Four recipients will receive $4000 each and mentorship. Applications are due June 8.
• The Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color Award is accepting applications through June 15. The recipient will receive $1500 to assist them in career and writing development.
• The John Locher Memorial Award is accepting applications from political cartoonists aged 18-25 through June 15. The recipient will receive $1000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the annual Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.
• Underrepresented writers in the UK are invited to apply to The Creative Future Literary Awards 2018 through June 18. Prizes include cash, mentorship opportunities, anthology publication, and more.
• The GLAS Animation Grant Program is accepting applications from US-based animators through June 30. Two $2500 grants will be awarded to help created independent animated short films.
• The NATTO (National Art & Trade Tuition Opportunity) Scholarship is accepting applications through June 30. Three recipients will receive prizes of $1000, $500, and $250 respectively to be used towards art education.
• DC ZineFest (July 21) is offering grants to marginalized members of the zine community offering $50 and a quarter table at the event.
• Western Washington primary and secondary school educators and librarians are invited to apply for the C4C3 Grant to bring more graphic novels and comics into the educational process.

Tor Teen’s Anger Is A Gift essay contest is accepting written submissions from people aged 13 and older through April 30. Winners will receive $5000, have their essay published in Teen Ink, and receive a signed copy of Anger Is A Gift.

Miss Anthology is accepting submissions of up to 10 pages from female and/or LGBTQIA+ comic creators age 9-18 living in the Pacific Northwest through May 1.

The New York Times is accepting submissions to their 9th annual Found Poem Student Contest through May 4. Students age 13-19 may enter.

Comics Club highlights and connects comic clubs and shares advice and resources to help youth comic creators.
