Awards

The Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award is accepting nominations through May 25.

Nominations from pros and fans are open for the 2018 Ringo Awards through May 30. Read here to learn more about which comics can be nominated.

The Broken Pencil Zine Awards are accepting submissions of zines, comics, and micro-journals through July 1. There is a submission fee of $25 for the first zine submitted and $10 for zines thereafter, with a maximum of three zine submissions per person, and it includes a year subscription to Broken Pencil Magazine.

Crowdfunded Projects

(NSFW!) Comic artist Tess Stone is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to print Seen Nothing Yet, a 3-volume 18+ full color comic about amateur ghost hunters. Tier options include volumes 1, 2, and 3 of the series, patches, charms, prints, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on May 19.

Women Write About Comics is crowdfunding on IndieGogo in order to fund their move to a new webhost. Women Write About Comics is an Eisner-nominated comics criticism website that has branched off to produce criticism on moving pictures and games as well as zine series Secrets of the Goat People. Tier options include digital and physical thank you notes and digital copies of  Secrets of the Goat People. The campaign ends on May 20.

Neither Here Nor Hair is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of their comic anthology. Neither Here Nor Hair features 14 Australian artists whose comics explores their personal relationships with their body hair. Tier options for this Kickstarter include digital and physical copies of the book, signed prints, and commissions. The Kickstarter ends on May 27.

(NSFW!) Erika Moen and Matthew Nolan are hosting a Kickstarter to fund Drawn to Sex – The Basics, a sex education comic book. The Basics “explore[s] the practical side of sex, from what defines sex, to barriers, STI testing, masturbation, and the ins-and-outs (and ins-and-outs) of having sex with other people.” Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, a digital wallpaper, a cameo in the comic, and a meet-and-greet. The Kickstarter ends on May 31.

Fireside Stories is raising funds on Kickstarter for the production of Magical Boy Basil #3. Magical Boy Basil is an ongoing LGBTQ webcomic series that follows magical teenagers and their fight against monsters as they seek to restore balance in the universe. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the third issue of Magical Boy Basil, previous issues of Magical Boy Basil, a sticker sheet, an enamel pin, original artwork, and more. The Kickstarter ends on June 3.

Fatventure Mag Volume 1 is raising funds on Kickstarter to produce its first issue. Fatventure will focus on fat-identified women and nonbinary storytellers in the active, fitness, and outdoorsy community ” without being devalued for their size, ability, or motivation.” Tier options include digital and physical copies of the magazine, stickers, temporary tattoos, water bottles, bandanas, and prints. The Kickstarter ends on June 4.

Tara and Ali are currently raising funds to produce the second volume of their comic ARRO. Arro follows a team of scouts hired three years following a population decimation in North America caused by a gene-altering disease in water. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the first and second volumes, a Fine OK Press tote bag, and custom artwork. The Kickstarter ends on June 7.

CJ Joughin is raising funds on Kickstarter to fund the production of the City of Cards: Omnibus Volume 1. To quote the Kickstarter, “City of Cards is the story of Plato, a former wrestler haunted by his past mistakes, and Ace, the person Plato loves more than anything— an amnesiac literally haunted by ghosts.” The printed omnibus will contain over 400 pages of black and white comics comprising the first major arc of the series. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, a digital soundtrack to accompany the book, enamel pins, and art prints. The Kickstarter ends on June 14.

General

Brought to you by Hey, Art Friends, the Spare Change Grant Program is accepting applications from Black artists, artists of color, and/or gender minority artists through May 25. $50 will be given to at least one Black and/or POC artist and one gender minority artist for the purpose of paying for application fees for residencies, grants, calls for entry, and related art calls.

  • Threadless is accepting artwork for the following design challenges: Travel, due today, May 18; Digital Cross-Stitch, due May 25; and Over It, due June 1.
  • The University of Leicester – Wellcome Trust ISSF is seeking contributors to their “Missing Panels” zine by May 23. Selected contributors will be paid up to £350 for 4 pages and £175 for 2 pages of full-color comics and will also receive 25 copies of the zine.
  • Swim On: Coral Reef – A Shark Zine for Charity is accepting applications from artists through May 25.
  • StArt Faire is accepting submissions of comic-related advertisements, articles, comics, light novels, and short stories through May 29.
  • The Nib is seeking pitches for their upcoming quarterly zine. Pitches for the first prompt, “Family,” are due May 30; pitches for “Empire” are due August 30; and pitched for “Scams” are due November 30.
  • Ink Drop Cafe is hosting an art contest. Draw Ink Drop Cafe mascot Squiddy by May 31 for a chance to win original artwork and comics from Ink Drop Cafe members and more.
  • The Silent Manga Audition is accepting submissions to their extra contest “WASAMON – Give it a try!” through May 31. Black and white comics of 1-17 pages or black and white or color illustrations may be submitted for a chance at cash prizes.
  • The Cheltenham Illustrator Awards is accepting submissions through June 1. Illustrators in either the Student or Emerging and Established categories may submit work related to the theme “Tangled Tales.”
  • Tapas will have their Creator Incubator Program open through June 1 through July 1.
  • The SHOUT OUT! Anthology is accepting pitches from queer creators through June 10. Stories should involve a teenage (age 13-17) queer protagonist and have an overall uplifting or hopeful mood.
  • The 12th Annual International Manga Award is accepting submissions of manga through June 15. Winners will receive a ten-day trip to Japan for the award ceremony.
  • Illustra Ciencia is accepting illustrations created in 2017 or 2018 based on science or nature for the Internacional Award on Scientific and Nature Illustration through June 20.
  • (NSFW!) Shousetsu Bang Bang is seeking writers through June 19 and artists through June 23 for their upcoming issue themed “Perchance to Dream.”
  • The Biodiversity Drawing Contest is accepting entries from artists worldwide through June 30. Artists may submit work in one of two categories: scientific design and nature drawing.
  • SacAnime is hosting two art contests – one for the program cover/badge art, and another for a t-shirt design. Entries are due by July 1, and selected winners will receive a free badge, artist alley table, and helper badge for the 2019 Winter convention.
  • Dates Anthology is accepting submissions for their third anthology with the theme “Adventure” through July 6. Contributors will be paid $50 per page and will receive 5 complimentary copies of the book.
  • Key Colours 2018 is accepting submissions of previously unpublished 24-page children’s books for children aged 2-7 worldwide through July 16. The award recipient will receive 7500 euros and will be published by Clavis Publishing House.
  • The Association of Illustrators is accepting submissions from artists worldwide for the 2019 Poster Prize for Illustration through July 16. Award recipients may receive up to £2,000 and a feature on a London Transport Museum poster to be displayed on the London Underground.
  • Lee & Low books are accepting submissions for their New Visions Award through August 31. Cash prizes and a standard publication contract will be given for a middle grade or young adult novel (including graphic novels) by a writer of color or Native/Indigenous writer.
  • The Nami Island International Picture Book Illustration Concours is accepting entries from illustrators worldwide through August 31. Award recipients may receive up to $10,000, plaques, and features in exhibitions.
  • The Art Zine Prize for 2018 is accepting submissions through September 1. Artwork can be submitted as figurative art, abstract art, and urban art, and a people’s choice award will be given to a fourth prize recipient.

Mentorships & Fellowships

The Maynard 200 Fellowship Program is accepting applications journalism leaders, journalism entrepreneurs and storytellers nationwide through May 31. Travel and housing costs will be covered for those selected.

The PEN America Writing for Justice Fellowship is accepting submissions through July 1. The six writers selected will receive $10,000 each with the option to request up to $5000 more for travel and research so that they may create works of lasting merit that illuminate critical issues related to mass incarceration and catalyze public debate.

The Representation Matters Mentorship Program is accepting applications on a rolling basis from self-identified people of color interested in the publishing industry. Mentorships will last 6 months, with a minimum of one session every two months.

  • We Need Diverse Books is accepting applications for their Walter Grants through May 31. Unpublished, diverse illustrators and writers working towards a career in children’s literature are welcome to apply.
  • Getty Images, in Partnership with the ARRAY Alliance, is offering the ARRAY Grant for photographers and film makers “who capture the visual narrative of underrepresented ethnic communities and use their medium to progress visual representation.” Four recipients will receive $4000 each and mentorship. Applications are due June 8.
  • The Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color Award is accepting applications through June 15. The recipient will receive $1500 to assist them in career and writing development.
  • The John Locher Memorial Award is accepting applications from political cartoonists aged 18-25 through June 15. The recipient will receive $1000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the annual Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.
  • Underrepresented writers in the UK are invited to apply to The Creative Future Literary Awards 2018 through June 18. Prizes include cash, mentorship opportunities, anthology publication, and more.
  • The GLAS Animation Grant Program is accepting applications from US-based animators through June 30. Two $2500 grants will be awarded to help created independent animated short films.
  • The NATTO (National Art & Trade Tuition Opportunity) Scholarship is accepting applications through June 30. Three recipients will receive prizes of $1000, $500, and $250 respectively to be used towards art education.
  • DC ZineFest (July 21) is offering grants to marginalized members of the zine community offering $50 and a quarter table at the event.
  • Western Washington primary and secondary school educators and librarians are invited to apply for the C4C3 Grant to bring more graphic novels and comics into the educational process.

  • The Arts Writers Grant Program is accepting applications from emerging and established artists writing about contemporary art through May 21. Recipients in four categories will receive between $15,000 and $50,000.
  • StArt Faire is accepting submissions of comic-related advertisements, articles, comics, light novels, and short stories through May 29.
  • Strange Horizons is accepting submissions of short fiction from writers who are black, indigenous, and/or people of color and living in the Southeastern USA through May 31. Selected writers will be paid $0.08 per word.
  • Iridium Magazine‘s reading period is now open through June 15. They accept genre and speculative fiction featuring a QUILTBAG+ cast at $0.03/word.
  • (NSFW!) Shousetsu Bang Bang is seeking writers through June 19 and artists through June 23 for their upcoming issue themed “Perchance to Dream.”
  • Black from the Future: A Black Speculative Fiction Anthology is accepting submissions through June 30.
  • The Louise Meriwether First Book Prize is accepting submissions from women of color and nonbinary writers of color who are unpiblished residents of the Uited States or its territories. Submit by June 30 for a chance to rceive a $5000 advance and publication from The Feminist Press.
  • (NSFW!) Cleis Press is accepting submissions for their first volume of Best Bondage Volume of the Year through July 1. Selected authors will receive $75 and two copies of the published book. Cleis Press is also accepting submissions for the Best Women’s Erotica of the Year Volume 5 through August 1. Selected submissions will be published and their writers will receive $200 and 2 copies of the published book.
  • Vulture Bones is seeking speculative fiction from trans and nonbinary voices through July 1. Contributors will be paid $5 per article.
  • (Brooklyn, NY) Atlas Obscura is looking for two paid Editorial Fellows. Apply by July 2 for consideration. They’re also seeking fellows for Gastro Obscura, with one focusing on Food & Drink.
  • The NHMC Television Writers’ Program is accepting applications from scriptwriters for a five-week workshop preparing Latinos for writing jobs on television shows through August 5. The program will take place in Burbank, CA from October 8 to November 9. A $250/week stipend will be provided for participants.
  • Lee & Low books are accepting submissions for their New Voices Award and New Visions Award through August 31. For the New Voices Award, cash prizes and a standard publication contract will be given for a children’s picture book manuscript by a writer of color or Native/Indigenous writer. For the New Visions Award, cash prizes and a standard publication contract will be given for a middle grade or young adult novel (including graphic novels) by a writer of color or Native/Indigenous writer.
  • Foreshadow: A Serial YA Anthology is accepting submissions of YA fiction through September 1. Contributors will be paid $250 per accepted submission,
