The 2018 Ignatz Awards nominees were announced. Congratulations to the nominees!
The Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards (also known as the Ringo Awards) are open for voting by professional comics creators through today, August 31.
The Oregon Book Awards are accepting applications through September 10. Books by Oregon authors with an original publication date between September 1, 2017 and August 31, 2018 are eligible for awards in a number of categories.
The 2018 Cupcake Award is now accepting applications through September 30. Award recipients will receive $250 towards making a new minicomic, a free half table at CAKE, mentor support, and promotion.

Crowdfunded Projects
Joamette Gil of Power and Magic Press is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Heartwood: Non-binary Tales of Sylvan Fantasy. Heartwood contains over 250 pages of comics written and illustrated by nonbinary contributors exploring the forest and its transformative and mysterious nature. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, digital and physical copies of Power and Magic’s Immortal Souls and Power and Magic books, a digital wallpaper, an enamel pin, prints, bookplates, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on September 1.
The Nasty Girls Graphic Novel is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce its first volume. Nasty Girls follows the all-girl punk rock band Misfit Toys as they contend with the patriarchal systems of oppression that affect their music and their lives. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the first volume, postcards, prints, issues of Cult Empire Comics series, and badges. The Kickstarter ends on September 8.
Comic artist Courtney Hahn is running a Kickstarter to fund the printing of Drop Out, a comic about a girl who, after dropping out of college, discovers something unimaginable in the nearby woods. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, a digital wallpaper, postcards, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on September 10.
Kitfox Games is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce action-RPG dungeon crawler Boyfriend Dungeon: Date Your Weapons. Improving your relationships with your weapons improves your fighting skills and allows you to pursue romance with male, female, and nonbinary characters. Tier options include a digital copy of the game, the game soundtrack, Steam keys for other Kitfox games, an enamel pin, a physical box set, stickers, and more. The Kickstarter ends on September 15.
Fantasy artist Jodie Snow is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish The Enchanted Forest Fantasy Art Book. The book features 14 international fantasy artists, over 130 pages of art, and 28 pages of exclusive tutorials and walkthroughs covering traditional and digital media, color theory, and more. Tier options include a copy of the physical book, a digital copy of the tutorials, foiled and unfoiled art prints, and postcards. The Kickstarter ends on September 15.
FORESHADOW: A Serial YA Anthology is running an IndieGoGo campaign to raise funds to pay its contributors and fund the costs of hosting, marketing, and operation costs. FORESHADOW’s aim is to highlight underrepresented voices, acclaimed YA authors, and emerging authors in a free-to-access online format. Tier options include a recommended reading list, a sticker, an enamel pin, a notebook, a tote bag, surprise books and anthologies, a phone call with an editor, a phone call with an agent, sponsorships, and more. The campaign ends on September 16.
Vanessa Stefaniuk is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce a print edition of Radio Silence: Volume 1. Radio Silence is an LGBTQ+ coming-of-age story that follows a British rock band’s rise to fame and the interpersonal challenges that come along with touring and popularity. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, guest artist prints, acrylic keychains, pinback buttons, t-shirts, volumes 1 and 2 of Where Is Home?, a lanyard, and a comic cameo. The Kickstarter ends on September 19.
Draw the Line, a comics anthology addressing contemporary politics, is currently crowdfunding on Unbound. The 144-page hardback anthology featuring work by 114 artists encourages proactive responses to injustice and offers non-partisan guides for political actions and dissent. Tier options include digital and hardback copies of Draw the Line, prints, a bookplate, comics by David Blumenstein, commissions, and more. All proceeds following book production and shipping costs will be given to helprefugees.org.
Reimena Yee is currently raising funds on Unbound to produce a hardcover edition of the first volume of her Eisner-nominated webcomic The Carpet Merchant of Konstantiniyya. The Carpet Merchant is set in 17th-century Istanbul and centers a carpet merchant who must contend with his home, his relationships, and his faith after he is killed by a vampire. Tier options include digital and physical copies of Volume 1, bookmarks, an exclusive print by strangelykatie, postcards, an enamel pin, a signed bookplate, and a commission.

- Kinokuniya is hosting a tote bag design contest. Submit artwork based on the theme “Book Journey” by today, August 31 for a chance to win Kinokuniya gift cards and be featured on the Kinokuniya tote bag.
- The Little Hakka International Picture Book Award is accepting submissions through today, August 31. Work must have been created or published between January 2015 and August 2018 and should include at least 10 images. There is no fee to enter, and prize winners may receive up to 30,000 RMB.
- The Nami Island International Picture Book Illustration Concours is accepting entries from illustrators worldwide through today, August 31. Award recipients may receive up to $10,000, plaques, and features in exhibitions.
- Lee & Low books are accepting submissions for their New Visions Award through today, August 31. Cash prizes and a standard publication contract will be given for a middle grade or young adult novel (including graphic novels) by a writer of color or Native/Indigenous writer.
- NASA’s Project Mars competition is accepting films and posters regarding space travel to Mars through today, August 31. Film producers may win up to $10,000 and poster creators may win up to $1500.
- The Art Zine Prize for 2018 is accepting submissions through September 1. Artwork can be submitted as figurative art, abstract art, and urban art, and a people’s choice award will be given to a fourth prize recipient.
- Girls Drawin’ Girls is accepting membership applications from September 1 to January 2, 2019.
- Elements Anthology is accepting applications from people of color for its newest anthology, “Earth,” through September 2. Contributors will be paid $50/page upon Kickstarter success and will receive 5 softcover copies of the anthology.
- LINE Webtoon is hosting a “Discover Creator” comic contest with cash prizes of up to $80,000. Submit your comic between June 11 and September 13 for a chance to win. See the rules for details on categories and amount and length of episodes required for qualification.
- (Burbank, CA) DC Super Hero Girls is looking for an in-house character designer. Apply by September 7 for consideration.
- The Asexual is accepting submissions of art and writing for A(gender): An Anthology through September 15.
- Broken Pencil is accepting submissions of international zines for exhibition at the Canzine festivals through September 20.
- Ad Astra Comix is seeking queer male Canadian cartoonists to create comics about body positivity for queer men through September 20. Contributors will receive $200/page.
- The Sapphic Zine is accepting applications from artists and writers through September 20. Profits will be split among contributors.
- Texas A&M University is seeking artists and artist teams to create site-specific artwork for two new Student Services locations. Submit by September 22 for consideration. Semifinalists will receive $4000 each to develop their concept and present it to the jury, and selected artists and/or teams will receive either a $90,000 or $150,000 grant (depending on the location they develop) to complete their concept.
- Local Haunts: A Spooky Comic Anthology is accepting applications through September 25. Comics should be between 1-5 pages when completed and preferably in color. Contributors will receive $50 per page if sales goals are met.
- The City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Arts program is accepting submissions for its 2019 One City One Pride Arts Festival Design Competition through September 27. The selected artist will receive $600 and have their art featured on a pamphlet and city-wide banners.
- The Bennett Prize is accepting submissions from women fine art figurative painters through September 28. There is an entry fee of $50.
- Upcoming anthology Boricua en la Luna is accepting applications from Puerto Rican writers, illustrators, and comic artists through September 30. Selected contributors will receive a copy of the anthology; otherwise, proceeds will go to the Hispanic Federation.
- Cloudscape Comics’ Life Finds A Way comic anthology project is accepting submissions of proposals and completed scripts through September 30. Accepted contributors will receive $50/page pending Kickstarter success. Proposed comics should be up to 12 pages long and in full color.
- The Silent Manga Audition is accepting comic submissions of 31 pages or less for its 10th contest through September 30. Comics should have the theme(s) of friendship, effort, and/or victory. Cash, Wacom, and Clip Studio Paint prizes will be awarded to winners.
- Specto Art Space is seeking submissions of artwork related to the visual lore of fear now through September 30. There is a $35 entry fee, but printing and framing of artwork is provided for free. The recipient of Best in Show will receive $400, with 2 $100 Honorable Mention prizes awarded. Specto Art Space takes 35% commission on any artwork sold.
- Manifest is seeking submissions for the 9th Annual Manifest Prize ONE through October 1. The prize recipient will receive $5000 and a solo exhibition. Ten runners-up will also be published in the Manifest Exhibition Annual. There is a submission fee of $40.
- Antenna’s Open Call is accepting applications from local Louisiana artists and artists nationwide and internationally located through October 15. The selected nonlocal artist will be awarded a solo show for the 2018 calendar year, given an honorarium of $1,000, paid shipping, paid travel to and from New Orleans for the install and opening of the exhibition, accommodations in Antenna’s residency space, and the publishing of an exhibition catalog, artist book, or similar work with Antenna’s publishing center, Paper Machine.
- The Embracing Our Differences 2018 Art Contest is accepting submissions from artists at all career stages through October 15. Three prizes of $1000 each will be given to selected entrants, whose works will be featured in a gallery show in early 2019.
- The PAVE 2018 Student Design Competition is accepting submissions from college-level students studying retail planning, design, visual merchandising, and branding programs. Submit by November 1 for a chance at cash prizes.
- Antenna is accepting unpublished comics and Guidebooks focused on some aspect of New Orleans at any stage of completion through November 30. There is a submission fee of $20. Artists of selected comics will receive an honorarium of $500, 50 printed copies, and royalties of $1/book should it be reprinted.
- The Nib’s upcoming quarterly magazine is seeking pitches for the issue on “Scams” by November 30.
- The Votes for Women anthology is accepting portfolio submissions from “creators who identify as female and have been affected by [the 19th amendment]” through November 30.
- The Palos Verdes Art Center in Los Angeles, CA is seeking proposals from artists for its 2019 building wrap exhibition by December 1. The selected artist will receive $5000 and will be featured in the gallery.
- Lilies Anthology is accepting submissions to their 7th volume “Lily Bulb” through January 22, 2019. The theme of the anthology will be the environment and should represent female/lesbian romance, relationships, and/or sexuality. They’re also currently seeking countdown artists!

Mentorships & Fellowships
- (Los Angeles, CA) The California Community Foundation’s Fellowship for Visual Artists is accepting submissions from LA County-based artists over 25 through today, August 31. Recipients will receive $25,000, a collaborative artists’ retreat, and access to a community of prestigious local artists.
- The Asian American Writers’ workshop is accepting applications from Asian American writers age 30 or under and based in New York City to its 2019 Margins Fellowship. Four selected applicants will receive $5,000, residency time at the Millay Colony for the Arts, mentorship, access to the AAWW writing space, and publication opportunities in online magazine The Margins. Applications must be submitted by September 12 for consideration.
- The Hodder Arts Fellowship is accepting applications from “artists and writers of exceptional promise” through September 18. Recipients will receive an $82,000 stipend and will have the academic year at Princeton University to pursue independent projects.
- The Princeton Arts Fellowship is accepting applications from early-career artists through September 18. Fellows are expected to stay for two consecutive academic years at Princeton University, teach one course per semester, and will receive an $81,000 stipend per year.
- The Roddenberry Fellowship is accepting applications from individuals whose work focuses on either immigrant & refugee rights, civil rights, LGBTQIA+ & women’s rights, or environmental protection through September 19. Fellowship recipients will receive $50,000 to put towards their project(s).
- The Brave New Fellows program is accepting applications from activist storytellers who want to learn how to use film to support their activism until September 21. Selected fellows will work 9-6PM in Culver City, CA beginning January 14, 2019 while receiving $800/week and PTO.
- Writers in who have not completed nor enrolled in MFA or PhD programs are invited to apply for the 2019 Winter Tangerine Fellowship through October 3. The 12-month fellowship will occur mostly online, and includes writing and editing a chapbook to be released through Honeysuckle Press, writing mentorship, private guest seminars, an editorial internship, and an honorarium.
- The Representation Matters Mentorship Program is accepting applications on a rolling basis from self-identified people of color interested in the publishing industry. Mentorships will last 6 months, with a minimum of one session every two months.
Residencies, Retreats, and Workshops
- (Breckenridge, CO) The 2019 Artist-in-Residence Program at Breckenridge Creative Arts is accepting applications from visiting, local, and exhibiting artists through today, August 31. Visiting artists will be reimbursed up to $500 for travel and will receive a stipend of $200 per week. They will be expected to mentor a local artist, facilitate a weekly class, take part in a public showcase, and host a final presentation with a local collaborator.
- Agapolis has partnered with Building 180 to offer a 6-week rent-free residency in Portola Valley, California through September 1. There are individual and collaborative residencies available.
- Rimbun Dahan is accepting applications from Southeast Asian artists to its residency through October 1. Residencies may last from 30-90 days, depending on immigration restrictions, and include accomodation, studio space, and a monthly allowance of 1000RM.
- The Art Studios program at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, NY is accepting applications for its Residency program and Fellowship through October 15. Residents will receive an honorarium of $125 per day and will work one day each week over a 6-month period. Fellows will work 40 hours/week and will receive an honorarium of $15,000.
