- Ko-fi added extra functions so that artists can more easily accept commissions.
- Twitter initially changed their image upload policy to no longer allow PNGs, but after hearing feedback, they updated their image upload policies from February 11 onward. Check this thread and its linked articles for more information.
- SPX has created a legal aid fund in support of 11 indie artists and an indie publisher who are faced with a defamation lawsuit because they spoke out against another creator’s alleged pattern of sexual abuse. Please support their cause and send the message that survivors of sexual assault do not feel afraid to speak out against their abusers and supporters of victims should not pay for an abuser’s crimes.

Awards
The Excellence in Graphic Literature Award is accepting submissions of books published in 2018 through February 15.
The Jeanne Córdova Prize for Lesbian/Queer Nonfiction is accepting applications from writers committed to non-fiction work that captures the depth and complexity of lesbian/queer life, culture and/or history until February 15.
The Nebula Awards are accepting nominations from Active, Lifetime Active, and Associate SFWA members in good standing until February 15.
The Prism Awards are accepting submissions of queer comics published in 2018 through February 15.
The Eisner Awards are now accepting submissions through March 15. Publishers may submit a maximum of five nominees for any one category, and the same item or person can be submitted in more than one category. Individual creators can also submit.
Eisner Hall of Fame voting for 2019 is open until March 15. Comics professionals working in the industry are welcome to vote.
The Hugo Awards are accepting nominations from WorldCon members until March 15. Renay made this handy spreadsheet so that members can more easily find your sci-fi/fantasy or SF/F-adjacent work and nominate it for voting. Creators from around the world can add themselves to the spreadsheet and are encouraged to do so for the best visibility. Nilah Magruder also explained the Hugos further in this thread!
The DiNKy Awards are accepting submissions for their 2019 show.
The Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation Through Adversity is accepting applications from US libraries and staff who overcome adversity and create lasting innovative community service programs that successfully inspire and connect with new readers. A $10,000 cash award will be given to a US library, and four runners-up will receive $1,000 in Penguin Random House books.
The Ladies of Horror Fiction Awards is accepting submissions of works of horror created by women (cis or trans) until December 31. The awards will be announced in 2020.
Crowdfunded Projects
Comic creator Emily Ree is currently running a make100 Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of Melty Color Psychology. The 80-page perfect bound paperback will contain concept art and illustrations from the past ten years of Ree’s webcomic Anarchy Dreamers, including comic pages, sketches, illustrations, and commentary. Tier options include a digital copy of the artbook or a signed physical copy. The Kickstarter ends on February 13.
Cloudscape Comics is currently hosting a Kickstarter to produce Chicken Soup and Goji Berries, a bilingual graphic novel about migration, family, and food. Created by Naomi Cui and Janice Liu, Chicken Soup and Goji Berries is a story about intergenerational relationships in a Chinese-Canadian family. Uniquely bilingual, the comic shows dialogue in the language its speaker is actually speaking in, and provides translation on the opposite facing page. Tier options include the paperback book, a package that includes stickers and prints with the book, other Cloudscape comics, and a placement in Janice Liu’s Young Artists’ Place class (Vancouver locals only). The Kickstarter ends on February 15.
Jamila Rowser, co-creator of comic Wash Day, is raising funds on Kickstarter to produce candles inspired by the main characters of the comic. Collaboratively created with Pontie Wax candle company, the two hand-poured soy candles reflect the personalities of characters Kim and Cookie. Tier options include one or both candles, a digital copy of the comic, an original print of Kim and Cookie, and an art commission. The Kickstarter ends on February 15.
Hope Nicholson of Bedside Press is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Work For a Million, a new graphic novel adaptation of crime fiction’s first lesbian private eye, Helen Keremos. Along with the graphic novel adaptation, Bedside Press will be re-publishing the original novel with a new cover by Sami Kivelä. Tier options include ebooks or physical books of either the novel, the graphic novel, or both, a bookplate, a print portfolio, prints, commissions, and a script consultation. The Kickstarter ends on February 15.
Shing Yin Khor is currently raising funds on Kickstarter through a make100 project to produce Strange Friends: a postcard book. The postcard book will collect 20 of Shing’s popular odd creature paintings into a collection of high-quality postcards. The make100 tier of this project is already sold out, but keep an eye out – it’s always possible for one of the special tiers, which combines the postcard book with a care package that includes limited edition prints, a zine, found objects, and other narrative ephemera, to open up again. Other tier options include the book, multiple copies of the book, or a gift-wrapped edition. The Kickstarter ends on February 16.
Artist Meredith Dillman is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Inkwork Led by Mothlight, a new collection of ink-driven works. The 42-page artbook will feature ink drawings of botanical fairies, foxes, moths, and mythology, and includes a limited-edition pin as part of Kickstarter’s Make/100 initiative. Tier options include the book itself and prints. The limited edition enamel pin has sold out, but Meredith may design another for other backers. The Kickstarter ends on February 20.
Comic creator Eve is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce the first paperback volume of their webcomic Inhibit. Inhibit follows Victor, a super-powered but hapless teenage superhero trainee with too many marks against his name. Soon he crosses path with an arsonist and finds himself tied up in crimes against the government. The paperback will feature over 200 pages of comics, including the prologue, the first five chapters of the comic, and bonus materials. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, stickers, prints, a charm, a commission, and a comic cameo. The Kickstarter ends on February 27.
Heartspark Press is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish 99% Chance of Magic, the first anthology for transgender kids written & illustrated by trans women and (C)AMAB non-binary creatives. The book features 180 pages composed of 9 illustrated chapters with inclusive and supportive stories for trans youth. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book (available in paperback and hardcover), a postcard, a social media shoutout, and additional children’s books. The Kickstarter ends on February 27.
Paradise Systems is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Naked Body: An Anthology of Chinese Underground Comics. The book will feature 100 full-color pages of comics from China’s comic community. Each 5-page long comic story will feature all nude main characters. tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, prints, short comics, lianhuanhua, and commissions. The Kickstarter ends on February 27.
Malissa White is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce NIGHTMARE! Issue #1. The dark fantasy comic follows Lucinda “Luz” Padilla as she discovers her recurring nightmares are actually alternative realities, wreaking havoc on her relationship, job, and sobriety. Because of graphic violence and horror, this series is recommended for mature readers. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the issue, an enamel pin, music, and a personalized thank you. The Kickstarter ends on February 28.
Jenn Dugan is raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Circadia’s 5th and final issue. Circadia is a queer fantasy about a ballerina and an assassin falling in love while trying to save the world, with each issue featuring a different team of queer women and nonbinary artists. Tier options include digital and physical copies of this fifth and final series issue, all previous issues, an enamel pin, mini comics, prints, an annotated script, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on February 28.
Writer Pat Shand is currently raising funds to produce Destiny, NY’s third volume. Logan McBride, once a magical girl, and Lilith Aberdine, the last surviving daughter of a mystical crime family, are the leads in this series where magic is a part of everyday life. This third volume will feature 200 pages of comics following Logan in California and Lilith in New York City. Tier options include digital and physical copies of volume 3, all previous volumes, art prints, a sticker, a signed bookplate, an enamel pin, art cards, additional comics, and more. The Kickstarter ends on February 28.
Sam Beck is currently raising funds on Kickstarterto produce the first book of comic Verse. Set in the fantasy world of Verse, the story follow Fife, who wants to apprentice as a swordsmith, and Neitya, a horned girl with no memories and the potential ability to tap into ancient magic. This volume of the comic will features its first four chapters and bonus world-building content. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book and postcard prints. The Kickstarter ends on March 1.
Vagabond Comics is raising funds on Kickstarter to produce its tenth issue as a full-color comic anthology. The volume features 17 stories about community and family. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, an enamel pin, buttons, a sticker, a tote bag, an embroidered hat, and more. The Kickstarter ends on March 3.
Artist Melquea Smith is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Awakening: An Uplifting Art Book. The paperback book will feature 32 pages of full-color artwork as well as Melquea’s personal reflections on dealing with creative and personal setbacks intended to inspire and uplift artists. Tier options include a copy of the book, computer and cell phone wallpapers, a 90-minute video on the artist’s process, original artwork, and a commission. The Kickstarter ends on March 3.

- The Representation Matters Mentorship Program is accepting applications on a rolling basis from self-identified people of color interested in the publishing industry. Mentorships will last 6 months, with a minimum of one session every two months.
- The Book Publishers Association of Alberta is offering 5 one-week residencies to Indigenous people interested in publishing. Participants receive $500 to cover time and expenses. Applications are due by February 28.
- The Ida B. Wells Fellowship is accepting applications from investigative reporters until March 1. Fellows will receive a $16,000 award, dedicated guidance from an editor at Type Investigations, and other funds related to travel and investigative costs.
- Writing by Writers is offering fellowships to Esalen Writer’s Camp in Big Sur, CA until April 15. Emerging writers of color and members of the LGBTQIA+ community are welcome to apply.
Residencies, Retreats, and Workshops
Lambda Literary’s Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Voices is accepting applications until February 1. Applications cost $25.

- The Judith A. Markowitz Award is accepting submissions from LGBTQ-identifying early-career or emergent writers with no more than one book published until February 15.
- The Queer Press Grant is currently accepting submissions through March 1.
- The Creators for Creators Grant is accepting applications from single cartoonists or writer/artist duos until March 18. Applicants must not have ever been published by a third-party publisher, and stories pitches must be between 64-100 pages upon completion.
The Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant is accepting applications from nonfiction writers with a signed contract from a publisher until April 22.
- A number of micro grants are available for marginalized writers.
- The Awesome Foundation offers $1000 grants on a rolling basis.
- Black Rainbow offers microgrants of $300 to LGBQTI people of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community that includes $200 to assist with hosting Indigenous LGBTQI community events.
- The Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism is accepting applications from artists on a rolling basis. Artists covering data privacy, the 2018/2020 elections, the role of technology in society, political influence campaigns, harmful technologies, countering disinformation, and artificial intelligence may receive $500 to $5,000 in grants.

- Canadian artists and cultural connectors are welcome to apply for grant funds through the Professional Development for Arts Professionals of Supporting Artistic Practice. Details on how and when you can apply are available on the page.
- Are you a professional freelancer experiencing financial duress? The Haven Foundation offers grants and assistance to applicants with chronic illness or injury or other career-threatening emergencies.
- The Spare Change Grant Program offers grants each month to a person of color and/or gender minority to be used for covering application costs for residencies and calls for submissions. Apply by the 25th of each month for a chance at the award.
- Springboard for the arts offers an Emergency Relief Fund for personal and community disasters that affect artists in Minnesota.
- Tulsa Remote is accepting applications from remote workers who are willing to relocate to Tulsa, OK in exchange for reduced rent and a total of $10,000 over the course of a year. Read more about the program here.

- Autostraddle is accepting pitches from Black writers for their 2019 Black History Month series. They are also accepting pitches on an ongoing basis.
- Lackington’s is accepting short speculative fiction submissions with the theme “voyages” until February 10.
- Flawless Magazine is accepting written submissions from women of color for The Future Issue until February 11.
- Lethe Press is seeking short story submissions for Transcendent 4: The Year’s Best Transgender Speculative Fiction until February 15. They are also accepting submissions for Hatchet Job, an anthology collection full of horror short stories of 10,000 words or less, until April 30.
- 3 of Cups Press is seeking applications from writers until February 24.
- Carina Press is seeking proposals for contemporary romances for the 2019 holiday season until February 27. Writers only need to submit 7,500 words of completed manuscript at minimum; more can be completed after acceptance. Carina Press is also seeking other proposals for Carina Adores, detailed further below.
- Uncanny Magazine is currently accepting proposals from disabled writers for upcoming issue “Disabled People Destroy Fantasy” until February 28.
- We Need Diverse Books is hosting a short story contest from February 4 to March 4. Unpublished authors are welcome to apply. Submissions must be 4,000 words or less. and reflect the theme “fantastic worlds, impossible places.” The selected author will be published in an upcoming WNDB anthology and be paid $1,500.
The OC Adventure Zine “A Call to Action” is accepting applications from artists and writers until March 1. Profits will be evenly distributed amongst contributors after printing costs are covered.
- The Oxford Comics Network has a Call for Papers on “Comics and Travel” open until March 8.
- The Auburn Avenue is seeking written submissions and photography with the theme “The South Got More to Say…” for their Spring/Summer 2019 issue until March 31.
- Carnation Press is seeking queer interpretations of the ACD canon for an anthology of Sherlock Holmes-inspired works until May 1. They’re also seeking submissions of short stories from fanfiction writers seeking to transition into publishing their original writing content. They are actively seeking submissions with asexual or aromantic main characters. They are also seeking cover artists and plot and style editors.
- Cleis Press is seeking submissions for Best Women’s Erotica of the Year, Volume 6 from authors who are “women, gender nonconforming, genderqueer and/or nonbinary” until June 1. Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis. Selected writers will receive $225 and 2 copies of the printed book.
Less Than Three Press is accepting submissions for its LGBTQIA anthology Creature Feature until July 31.
