News
- If you follow Paper Cat Press on WordPress, the emails you receive when I post may wind up in your Spam folders, even if you check the emails every week. Be sure to check, and mark as “Not Spam”! I will create a new mailing list in April that will hopefully address this.
- Patreon announced that in May, they will change how their payment fees are structured. Artists recommend signing up now so you can be grandfathered into Patreon’s current rate, which currently claims 5% of all pledges made to your account.
- On April 4, Gumroad creators will take 100% of their profits and there will be no fees charged.
- SPX has created a legal aid fund in support of 11 indie artists and an indie publisher who are faced with a defamation lawsuit because they spoke out against another creator’s alleged pattern of sexual abuse. Please support their cause and send the message that survivors of sexual assault do not feel afraid to speak out against their abusers and supporters of victims should not pay for an abuser’s crimes.

Awards
You can vote for the Locus Awards until April 15.
The Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation Through Adversity is accepting applications from US libraries and staff who overcome adversity and create lasting innovative community service programs that successfully inspire and connect with new readers. A $10,000 cash award will be given to a US library, and four runners-up will receive $1,000 in Penguin Random House books.
The Ladies of Horror Fiction Awards is accepting submissions of works of horror created by women (cis or trans) until December 31. The awards will be announced in 2020.
Crowdfunded Projects
Fatventure Mag is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce its second volume. Continuing its mission of “focusing on active lifestyles beyond the boundaries of weight-loss culture,” Fatventure Mag Volume 2 features writers and artists whose work features the theme of “home.” Tier options include digital and physical copies of Fatventure Volume 2, a physical copy of Fatventure Volume 1, stickers, patches, an enamel pin, and ad space. The Kickstarter ends on April 7.
Victor M. H. is currently raising funds to produce Novereal Volume 1- Save the Multiverse. The 40-page, full-color comic book follows a group of scientists whose explorations into parallel universes cause blurring of realities and cross-dimensional overlap. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, an art book, and an option for a cameo in the comic. The Kickstarter ends on April 8.
What We’re Meant For – a 2D Animated Short Film is currently raising funds on Kickstarter for its production. The film is a drama with fantasy and thriller elements that explores grief, disconnect, and reconciliation following death in the family of a young girl and her closed-off father. Tier options include a digital download of the movie, in-depth commentary from the writer/director, in-depth commentary from one of the lead producers, previous films made by the director, access to the original animatic and script, original artwork, and more. The Kickstarter ends on April 12.
Haunted Cosmos is currently running a relaunch campaign to fund Strange Waters: A Queer Fantasy Comic Anthology. The anthology will feature about 160 pages of black and white queer, water-themed comics by queer contributors. Tier options include physical and digital copies of the book, stickers, postcards, a bookplate, postcards, and commissions. The Kickstarter ends on April 14. (Disclosure: I am a contributor to this anthology.)
Little Red Bird Press is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish three new comics collections in 2019. The three comics, one each by Gerardo Alba, Zak Kinswella, and Ally Shwed, will be less than 60 pages each and collected into individual softcover volumes. Tier options include digital and physical copies of each of the books, prints, patches, original artwork, and other Little Red Bird Press books. The Kickstarter ends on April 17.
Microcosm Publishing is currently raising funds to produce Hardcore Anxiety: A Graphic Guide to Punk Rock and Mental Health by Reid Chancellor. This 192-page graphic novel memoir follows the creator through his experiences in a punk rock band dealing with his anxiety after writing on a bathroom wall puts him into a spiral. Tier options include a physical book, additional Microcosm Publishing books, a print, and more. The Kickstarter ends on April 26.
Thea Ferrara is currently raising funds to produce Planetside: A Sci-Fi Slice of Life Comic Anthology. To quote the Kickstarter, “Planetside is a full color, 200+ page all-ages comic anthology that looks beyond the grandiose scope of more traditional science fiction stories and into the quieter moments set in those worlds.” Tier options include digital wallpapers, digital and physical copies of the book, a sticker, an enamel pin, and prints. The Kickstarter ends on April 26.
Kristen Kiomall-Evans is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to print XII: Of Magic and Muses Volume 1. In this magical teen girl fantasy, protagonist Willow is gifted a magical necklace that begins to uncover long-buried secrets of her mundane, restricted school. The 330-page full-color comic has been posted online since 2016 and is available to read here. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, a digital wallpaper, a print, stickers, buttons, an acrylic standee, a signed bookplate, and a commission. The Kickstarter ends on April 30.

Threadless is accepting artwork for the following design challenges: Bauhaus, due April 5; and Dark Anime, due April 12; and Vintage Vacation, due April 19.
- The Webcomic Almanac 2.0 is accepting submissions until April 6. The charity art zine is for webcomic creators to submit new artwork promoting their series.
- The Ribbit! Zine is accepting submissions until April 8. The zine is for charity, and contributors are not paid, but will receive a copy of the zine.
- Clip Studio Paint’s 19th International Illustration Contest is accepting submissions with the theme “fruit” until April 10.
The Zine Who Rejected Me is currently accepting submissions of art created for but ultimately rejected by other zine and art book projects until April 13.
The Devilishly Zine is accepting applications until April 14. Payment will be split even amongst contributors.
- MediBang Paint is accepting entries to their Medi-chan Summer Fashion Dress-Up Contest until April 26. Using Medi-chan’s character template and design a new outfit for her for a chance to win up to ¥30,000. They’re also hosting the MCPO (Manga Contents Promote Organization) Awards and accepting entries until May 7. You can submit Illustrations with the theme “Journey” or Manga with an open theme. Winners may be awarded up to ¥200,000 and an invitation to an award ceremony.
- The Nib is accepting pitches about animals until April 30. They’re also accepting pitches with the theme of “drugs” on a general basis, as it will be the theme of the issue following “Animals.”
- Clip Studio Paint is accepting submissions of illustrations and comics with the theme “gift” from students until May 9.
- Dirty Diamonds is seeking contributors for its tenth and final issue with the theme “Death” until May 31. According to their submissions page, “Dirty Diamonds is an all-girl anthology, meaning we are all-inclusive. If you are female/femme, we want your comics.”
- The Shounen Shoujo Manga Award is accepting entries until May 31. All submissions must be original content and 2 pages or longer (no upper limit designated). Bessatsu Manga, a co-host of the Shounen Shoujo Manga Award, is also accepting illustrations with the theme “heart skips a beat” until May 31. Winners of the contests will receive a cash prize, a promise to have your work published, and you will be assigned an editor.
Miss Anthology is accepting submissions to their 2019 comic anthology from women and/or LGBTQIA+ individuals in the Pacific NW who are between ages 9 and 21 until June 1.
Lilies Anthology is accepting submissions for Volume 8 with theme “dreams” until June 15.
Bonfire Comics is accepting submissions for Topia: a Bonfire Anthology until July 15. Submissions must be between 1-16 pages. Illustrators will be paid $45 per illustration, and comic creators will be paid $15 per page. Artists will receive 5 copies of the finished book.
- The JUMP Paint Global Artistic Manga Award is accepting entries until September 24. Entries must be over 3 pages and submitted through the JUMP Paint app, and can be either original works or based on title selected by the JUMP editing team.
- Argot Magazine is seeking written and illustrated submissions about queer and marginalized experiences. Their payment ranges from $35 to $250 per piece.
- Arsenika is accepting portfolio submissions for reprint cover work and pays $100 for reprint artwork.
Artists Writers & Artisans is seeking journalists and investigative reporters to team up with comic writers for adaptations on true stories into fictional comic works.

Scholarships, Sponsorships, and Grants
The SAJA Professional Development Fund is awarding 10 journalists up to $500 each for personal development and is accepting applications until today, April 5.
- The Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant is accepting applications from nonfiction writers with a signed contract from a publisher until April 22.
- The Dash Grant is now accepting applications from small press creators until May 24. Recipients will receive a $250 grant to produce their book and premiere it at Short Run 2019, receive a free half table to Short Run, receive access to Fogland Studios in Seattle (and optional instruction), receive online mentorship, and be featured in an art show at Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery.
The Louise Meriwether First Book Prize is currently accepting fiction and narrative fiction from women of color and nonbinary writers of color until June 28. One winner will be awarded a $5,000 advance (half at the time of the initial award and half upon publication) and a contract to publish their book with the Feminist Press in print and digital editions in spring 2021.
- A number of micro grants are available for marginalized writers.
- The Awesome Foundation offers $1000 grants on a rolling basis.
- Black Rainbow offers microgrants of $300 to LGBQTI people of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community that includes $200 to assist with hosting Indigenous LGBTQI community events.
- The Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism is accepting applications from artists on a rolling basis. Artists covering data privacy, the 2018/2020 elections, the role of technology in society, political influence campaigns, harmful technologies, countering disinformation, and artificial intelligence may receive $500 to $5,000 in grants.
- Gumroad’s Creators Fund is accepting applications on a rolling basis. Gumroad will be allocating $50,000 in creative grants of $500 to $5,000 throughout the year.

- Canadian artists and cultural connectors are welcome to apply for grant funds through the Professional Development for Arts Professionals of Supporting Artistic Practice. Details on how and when you can apply are available on the page.
- Are you a professional freelancer experiencing financial duress? The Haven Foundation offers grants and assistance to applicants with chronic illness or injury or other career-threatening emergencies.
- The Spare Change Grant Program offers grants each month to a person of color and/or gender minority to be used for covering application costs for residencies and calls for submissions. Apply by the 25th of each month for a chance at the award.
- Springboard for the arts offers an Emergency Relief Fund for personal and community disasters that affect artists in Minnesota.
- Tulsa Remote is accepting applications from remote workers who are willing to relocate to Tulsa, OK in exchange for reduced rent and a total of $10,000 over the course of a year. Read more about the program here.
