News

  • If you follow Paper Cat Press on WordPress, the emails you receive when I post may wind up in your Spam folders, even if you check the emails every week. Be sure to check, and mark as “Not Spam”! I will create a new mailing list in April soon that will hopefully address this.
  • button_new3 Sparkler Monthly will cease operations this year. Their last issue is scheduled to be released in July, and some of their ongoing series will finish by then or before the end of the year.  They will also be hosting up to  50% off sale on their books and ebooks starting today, June 14.
  • You can now generate URLs before your Kickstarter project launches.
  • Kickstarter will be a launching a new challenge called “Break Kickstarter” from July 15 through August 15.
  • SPX has created a legal aid fund in support of 11 indie artists and an indie publisher who are faced with a defamation lawsuit because they spoke out against another creator’s alleged pattern of sexual abuse. Please support their cause and send the message that survivors of sexual assault do not feel afraid to speak out against their abusers and supporters of victims should not pay for an abuser’s crimes.

Awards

Bitch Media is currently accepting nominations of “leaders from marginalized communities who have made a tangible impact in the previous 12 months in the areas of activism, education, entertainment, politics, science, sports, and technology” for its Bitch 50 awards.

The Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation Through Adversity is accepting applications from US libraries and staff who overcome adversity and create lasting innovative community service programs that successfully inspire and connect with new readers. A $10,000 cash award will be given to a US library, and four runners-up will receive $1,000 in Penguin Random House books.

endingbutton_4 Eisner Awards voting is open until today, June 14. Are you a professional in the industry? Do you make webcomics? Then you can vote! Alex de Campi outlines the process here.

endingbutton_4 button_new3 The Ann Arbor Comic Arts Festival (A2CAF) is accepting votes for its 2019 Kids’ Comics Awards until June 15. Only youth aged 17 or younger may vote.

endingbutton_4 The John Locher Memorial Award is accepting applications from cartoonists whose work features a strong perspective on social or political issues and who are aged 18-25 until June 15. Award winners receive a $1,000 cash prize and an all-expense-paid trip to the annual convention of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.

The Ladies of Horror Fiction Awards is accepting submissions of works of horror created by women (cis or trans) until December 31. The awards will be announced in 2020.

Crowdfunded Projects

Northwest Press is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Theater of Terror: Revenge of the Queers. The anthology contains over 250 pages of short comics from 35 cartoonists whose work contends with queer identity and horror, whether garish or macabre. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, prints, and all-over-print t-shirt, a shower curtain, a ringtone, a personal voicemail, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on June 16.

Kadak Collective is currently raising funds to produce The Bystander Anthology. To quote the campaign, “This anthology led by the Kadak Collective is a collection of comic and graphic narratives for print and web – about geography and gender, identity and self, boundary and exclusion, experienced through the lens of the bystander.” Tier options include digital and physical copies of the anthology, prints, posters, postcards, zines from Space Between, walk-alongs for those in Mumbai, and much more! The Kickstarter ends on June 17.

Sharron Arledge is currently raising funds to produce the Professional #Pride Pin Series. The enamel pins celebrate finding a professional space where one is free to express their identity. Tier options include the pins themselves, from one up to all eleven in the series. The Kickstarter ends on June 17.

Open Field Studio is currently raising funds to produce Knight and Beard Volume 1.  Knight and Beard is a buddy-comedy comic that follows Knight, an angry young girl who wants to be a hero, and Beard, a gentle giant who hates conflict. The first volume will feature 192 full-color pages with a spot gloss cover. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, digital and physical copies of the Knight & Beard sketchbook, and postcards. The Kickstarter ends on June 20.

Shazleen Khan is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce BUUZA!! Volume 1: Good Morning Salwa. To quote the campaign page, “Set in an Urban Fantasy 90’s Middle East, Buuza is a slow burn, slice of life comic about found family, diaspora and religion.” This print volume will collect the first 9 chapters of the webcomic, which includes over 170 full color pages. Tier options include physical and digital copies of the book, a digital wallpaper, the short comic Cat Festival PDF, a sketchbook zine, a sticker, a print, and an enamel pin. The Kickstarter ends on June 21.

Tess Stone is currently raising funds to produce Not Drunk Enough Book Two. Following the events of its first volume, the horror-comedy comic continues the misadventures of Logan Ibarra and his compatriots, who must struggle to survive in a weird, monstrous unraveling of reality’s rules. Tier options include digital and physical copies of both book one and book two, a mixology zine, an enamel pin, a signed bookplate, original artwork, a cameo, and more. The Kickstarter ends on June 28.

button_new3 Ariel Vittori is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce SYNTH:org – a Robot Comics Anthology. The sci-fi comics anthology features 13 stories consisting of just under 200 full-color pages about artificial intelligence, androids, synthetic life, and more. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, a sticker, an enamel pin, a bookmark, a t-shirt, additional comics, and original artwork. Note: The physical book will only be in Italian, but English-language PDFs are available. The campaign ends on June 29.

button_new3 Jamie-Lee Reynolds is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce D&D Inspired Enamel Pins. The cute, spunky enamel pins are inspired by tabletop games such as Dungeons and Dragons and Critical Role. Tier options include enamel pins, the Miss Mythical Monster Coloring Book, and commissions. The Kickstarter ends on June 30.

General

(New York, NY) Random House Graphic is seeking a Marketing & Publicity Manager.

Rory Polanco is seeking feedback about a potential book subscription service “LGBTQube.”

Comics, Illustration, and More

  • Creator Resource is accepting answers to its 2018 page rates survey. If you worked in comics in 2018, share what you were paid to produce your work. Answers will be collected anonymously.
  • endingbutton_4 button_new3 Threadless is accepting artwork for the following design challenges: Gross, until today, June 14; and Lowbrow, due June 21; and Venn Diagrams, until June 28.
  • endingbutton_4 button_new3 Swim On: Deep Sea – A Shark Zine for Charity is accepting submissions until today, June 14.
  • endingbutton_4 Lilies Anthology is accepting submissions for Volume 8 with theme “dreams” until June 15.
  • button_new3 Sapphic Zines, Volume 2: Celebration will be opening applications on June 16.
  • Invisible Illness: Depression is accepting prose and comic pitches until June 24. All contributors will receive a digital copy of the anthology and reprinting rights, with physical copies and monetary compensation  depending on Kickstarter success.
  • REBIRTH: An Ecosocialist Anthology is seeking comic and prose pitches regarding ecosocialism until June 25. Contributors will be paid 50$ per page or .10 per word, plus any Kickstarter bonuses. Contributors also receive a minimum of 5 complimentary copies of the anthology, and royalties on any future print runs of the anthology after the first printing sells out.
  • Horror Collective Artemisia’s Axe is accepting submissions to their pride-themed horror zine NEON HORROR until June 30. Comics, illustrations, short stories, flash fiction, and collages from the LGBTQIA+ community are welcome. Contributors will be paid 25 pounds, with additional compensation depending on the success of funding. Contributors will also receive three zines and a PDF for self-printing.
  • Clip Studio Paint is now accepting “Tips of the Month.” This month, submit a tutorial about emulating colored pencils, creating fantasy backgrounds, or 3D Figures for Concept Art until June 30 for a chance at cash prizes.
  • Power and Magic Press is accepting applications for Latinx or Latin American artists, writers, and solo creators until July 7 for upcoming anthology Mañana.
  • Bonfire Comics is accepting submissions for Topia: a Bonfire Anthology until July 15. Submissions must be between 1-16 pages. Illustrators will be paid $45 per illustration, and comic creators will be paid $15 per page. Artists will receive 5 copies of the finished book.
  • button_new3 Fat Craft, a charity art zine about fat witches benefitting NOLOSE, will be accepting applications from artists June 17 – July 8.
  • button_new3 The Kyoto International Manga Award is accepting entries from manga/comic artists and illustrators until July 31. The theme of the competitions is “Kyoto,” and winners will be invited to Kyoto for the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair 2019 (and receive travel accommodations, including an interpreter). Cash prizes are also available.
  • Sound: A Comic Anthology is accepting submissions from artists of Asian descent living in Southeast Asia until July 31. Selected contributors will receive a page rate of $30/page.
  • The Blobby Horror Zine is accepting work until September 20. Selected contributors will not be compensated, but will be provided with files to print and sell the finished zine.
  • The JUMP Paint Global Artistic Manga Award is accepting entries until September 24. Entries must be over 3 pages and submitted through the JUMP Paint app, and can be either original works or based on title selected by the JUMP editing team.
  • The Silent Manga Audition is accepting entires for its 12th competition with the theme “New Beginning” until September 30.
  • Object Head Zine: Science and Technology is accepting submissions until October 2. Entries will be accepted provided that the follows the theme and rules. The zine will be available digitally for free.

  • A Totally Spies zine is accepting applications from artists until June 18. Profits will be split between contributors, and contributors will also receive a physical and digital copy of the zine.
  • Milestones, A Killua/Gon Hunter x Hunter fan zine, is accepting applications from artists and writers until July 15. Funds accrued will be put towards production costs and charity.

  • endingbutton_4 (Toronto, ON) BIPOC are invited to attend a day of portfolio-building and membership with Building BIPOC Careers in Tech on Saturday, June 15.
  • button_new3 Bitch Media’s Fellowships for Writers are accepting applications until June 30. Selected fellows will receive a $2,000 stipend for the duration of their 3-month fellowship.

Scholarships, Sponsorships, and Grants

  • PEN America’s grants for writers and translators are now accepting applications.
  • endingbutton_4 The AAEC/John Locher Memorial Award is accepting submissions from cartoonists aged 18-25 whose work demonstrates both clear opinions and strong artistry on political and social topics until June 15.
  • The Louise Meriwether First Book Prize is currently accepting fiction and narrative fiction from women of color and nonbinary writers of color until June 28. One winner will be awarded a $5,000 advance (half at the time of the initial award and half upon publication) and a contract to publish their book with the Feminist Press in print and digital editions in spring 2021.
  • The Mo Siewcharran Prize is accepting submissions from previously unpublished BAME authors until July 12. Prize winners will receive cash prizes and the opportunity to be published by Dialogue Books.
  • Applications are open for the Cupcake Award until July 30. The winner of the award will receive $250 to print a new minicomic, a free half table at next year’s CAKE (where their minicomic will debut), and the mentor support of CAKE’s special guest judge.
