News

• If you follow Paper Cat Press on WordPress, the emails you receive when I post may wind up in your Spam folders, even if you check the emails every week. Be sure to check, and mark as “Not Spam”! I will create a new mailing list in April soon that will hopefully address this.
• XOXO announced that they will no longer be working to create a successor to Drip, Kickstarter’s subscription platform for independent artists. 
• Sparkler Monthly will cease operations this year. Their last issue is scheduled to be released in July, and some of their ongoing series will finish by then or before the end of the year.  They are also be hosting up to 50% off sale on their books and ebooks.
• You can now generate URLs before your Kickstarter project launches.
•  Kickstarter will be a launching a new challenge called “Break Kickstarter” from July 15 through August 15. They will also be hosting a Small Press, Big Ideas challenge during September.
• SPX has created a legal aid fund in support of 11 indie artists and an indie publisher who are faced with a defamation lawsuit because they spoke out against another creator’s alleged pattern of sexual abuse. Please support their cause and send the message that survivors of sexual assault do not feel afraid to speak out against their abusers and supporters of victims should not pay for an abuser’s crimes.

Awards

Bitch Media is currently accepting nominations of “leaders from marginalized communities who have made a tangible impact in the previous 12 months in the areas of activism, education, entertainment, politics, science, sports, and technology” for its Bitch 50 awards.

The Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation Through Adversity is accepting applications from US libraries and staff who overcome adversity and create lasting innovative community service programs that successfully inspire and connect with new readers. A $10,000 cash award will be given to a US library, and four runners-up will receive $1,000 in Penguin Random House books.

The Ladies of Horror Fiction Awards is accepting submissions of works of horror created by women (cis or trans) until December 31. The awards will be announced in 2020.

Crowdfunded Projects

 Ariel Vittori is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce SYNTH:org – a Robot Comics Anthology. The sci-fi comics anthology features 13 stories consisting of just under 200 full-color pages about artificial intelligence, androids, synthetic life, and more. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, a sticker, an enamel pin, a bookmark, a t-shirt, additional comics, and original artwork. Note: The physical book will only be in Italian, but English-language PDFs are available. The campaign ends on June 29.

 Jamie-Lee Reynolds is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce D&D Inspired Enamel Pins. The cute, spunky enamel pins are inspired by tabletop games such as Dungeons and Dragons and Critical Role. Tier options include enamel pins, the Miss Mythical Monster Coloring Book, and commissions. The Kickstarter ends on June 30.

  Jenn Arledge of Arledge Comics is currently raising funds to produce TRANSparent Pun Enamel Pins. Perfect for parents of trans offspring or for transgender parents, the pin is available with 5 different color combinations. The Kickstarter ends on July 1.

 BunMuffin is currently raising funds to produce Pride Cake Slice Enamel Pins. The pins are a cute and colorful way of supporting LGBTQ+ identities in a more understated and less overt manner. The Kickstarter ends on July 8.

Stacked Deck Press is currently raising funds to publish Crush: First Love, New Talent. The anthology features the work of 32 contributors and over 200 pages of full-color comics about first love told from LGBTQAIU perspectives. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, a tote bag, other Stacked Deck Press books, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on July 10.

 Erin Ptah, creator of webcomics Leif and Thorn and But I’m a Cat Person, is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Tiernan & Patrick Enamel Pins. Tier options include the enamel pins themselves and digital copies of Leif and Thorn, But I’m a Cat Person, or both. The Kickstarter ends on July 11.

Kel McDonald is raising funds to reprint the anthology Can I Pet Your Werewolf? The anthology features 160 pages of black and white comics about friendship, family, romance, and lycanthropy. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, digital copies of other books by the contributors, prints, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on July 12.

The SpiderForest Webcomic Collective is currently raising funds to publish Threads: Haunted. This spooky anthology features 20 new stand-alone comics by SpiderForest members about anything hauntingly eerie. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, digital or physical copies of past SpiderForest books, and prints. The Kickstarter ends on July 12.

 Danna Z. is currently raising funds to produce a line of Dessert Buddies Hard Enamel Pins. Each character design has a short backstory explaining their relationship to the treats they’re holding. Tier options include enamel pins, stickers, prints, lanyards, and acrylic charms. The Kickstarter ends on July 15.

 Mark Bell is currently raising funds to produce S.P.I.R.I.T. Issue #1. Illustrated by Melissa Capriglione and written by Mark, S.P.I.R.I.T. follows Mary, Ada, Jane, and their new friend, Ash, as they investigate paranormal incidents for their vlog… and sometimes even meet ghosts for real! To quote the campaign page, “S.P.I.R.I.T. is a female, science, diversity and LGBTQ positive comic suitable for middle school kids and up.” Tier options include digital and physical copies of issue 1, prints, buttons, stickers, a digital sketchbook, a t-shirt, and more! The Kickstarter ends on July 17.

 Beehive Books is raising funds to produce LAAB: The Art Newspaper Powered by the Radical Imagination. This campaign specifically seeks to fund the production of their upcoming issue This Was Your Life, which contends with mortality, environmental devastation, necropolitics, and more. LAAB features interviews, articles, comics, horrorscopes, and more in a 48 page 16×21″ broadsheet newspaper printed on bright white heavy 50# paper stock. Tier options include digital and physical copies of both this issue (#4) and the first issue (#0 – LAAB numbering is non-sequential), signed screenprints, postcards, stickers, production artwork, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on July 18.

 Iron Circus is currently raising funds to produce Shattered Spear: The Print Edition. This limited edition, one-time-only print edition of Otava Heikkilä’s Shattered Spear is the first in a new experimental imprint of Iron Circus Comics named Circus Maximus. Print editions of this comic will only be available through this Kickstarter campaign. The Kickstarter ends on July 18.

General

  The Disney Launchpad: Shorts Incubator is accepting applications from directors with underrepresented backgrounds, including undocumented directors with DACA, until July 2.

The updated Diversity in Children’s Books 2018 Infographic is now available. Unfortunately, “children’s literature continues to misrepresent underrepresented communities.”

 The Kurodahan Press Translation Prize is accepting entries until end of day September 30, Japan time. The grand prize winner will receive a cash prize of 30,000 yen and a contract for publication for an additional payment to the winner.

(New York, NY) Random House Graphic is seeking a Marketing & Publicity Manager.

Rory Polanco is seeking feedback about a potential book subscription service “LGBTQube.”

Comics, Illustration, and More

•  Creator Resource is accepting answers to its 2018 page rates survey. If you worked in comics in 2018, share what you were paid to produce your work. Answers will be collected anonymously.
•  Threadless is accepting artwork for the following design challenges: Lowbrow, due June 21; Venn Diagrams, until June 28; and Contrast, due July 5; and Feelings, due July 12.
•  Horror Collective Artemisia’s Axe is accepting submissions to their pride-themed horror zine NEON HORROR until June 30. Comics, illustrations, short stories, flash fiction, and collages from the LGBTQIA+ community are welcome. Contributors will be paid 25 pounds, with additional compensation depending on the success of funding. Contributors will also receive three zines and a PDF for self-printing.
•  Clip Studio Paint is now accepting “Tips of the Month.” This month, submit a tutorial about emulating colored pencils, creating fantasy backgrounds, or 3D Figures for Concept Art until June 30 for a chance at cash prizes.
• Power and Magic Press is accepting applications for Latinx or Latin American artists, writers, and solo creators until July 7 for upcoming anthology Mañana.
• Sapphic Zines is accepting applications from writers and artists for their upcoming volume “Celebrate” until July 14. Contributors will receive one free digital and printed copy. Profits will be split equally among the contributors.
• Bonfire Comics is accepting submissions for Topia: a Bonfire Anthology until July 15. Submissions must be between 1-16 pages. Illustrators will be paid $45 per illustration, and comic creators will be paid $15 per page. Artists will receive 5 copies of the finished book.
• Corn Maze Press is accepting short comic proposals for their upcoming anthology “Home Sweet Home” until July 15. Contributors will be paid $25 per page.
• Fat Craft, a charity art zine about fat witches benefitting NOLOSE, will be accepting applications from artists until July 8.
•  Enchanted Conversation is accepting submissions of comics and fiction for their August issue about fairy tales, folktales, and myths until July 20. Writers and comic creators will be a paid a flat rate of $10 only.
•  Bedside Press is accepting artist and cartoonist team applications for Gothic Tales of Haunted Love 2: The Beloved Hereafter until July 26. Comics may be 5-10 pages, and pin-up artists will be accepted. Contributors will be paid $100/page.
• The Kyoto International Manga Award is accepting entries from manga/comic artists and illustrators until July 31. The theme of the competitions is “Kyoto,” and winners will be invited to Kyoto for the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair 2019 (and receive travel accommodations, including an interpreter). Cash prizes are also available.
• Sound: A Comic Anthology is accepting submissions from artists of Asian descent living in Southeast Asia until July 31. Selected contributors will receive a page rate of $30/page.
• The Blobby Horror Zine is accepting work until September 20. Selected contributors will not be compensated, but will be provided with files to print and sell the finished zine.
• The JUMP Paint Global Artistic Manga Award is accepting entries until September 24. Entries must be over 3 pages and submitted through the JUMP Paint app, and can be either original works or based on title selected by the JUMP editing team.
• The Silent Manga Audition is accepting entires for its 12th competition with the theme “New Beginning” until September 30.
• Object Head Zine: Science and Technology is accepting submissions until October 2. Entries will be accepted provided that the follows the theme and rules. The zine will be available digitally for free.

• Anathema accepts fiction and nonfiction submissions year-round from queer and nonwhite writers. They are open to portfolio submissions from illustrators for new/original and/or reprint cover art.
• Argot Magazine is seeking written and illustrated submissions about queer and marginalized experiences. Their payment ranges from $35 to $250 per piece.
• Arledge Comics is accepting submissions of all-ages comics on a rolling basis.
• Arsenika is accepting portfolio submissions for reprint cover work and pays $100 for reprint artwork.
• (New York, NY) Artisan Books, a division of Workman Publishing, Co. is seeking an art director.
• The Asexual is accepting general submissions from marginalized voices in the queer community.

• QueerWebcomics.com, a new small comics publisher, recently launched and has two mailing lists available for sign-up – one for professionals, and a general list for customers. 
• Robot Dinosaur Games is accepting artwork submissions for its upcoming anthology. They will pay $75 per piece.
• Scholastic Canada invites professional illustrators to email sample art and links to an online portfolio to Andrea Casault, Art Director at acasault@scholastic.ca.
• Sugar Cookie Jazz is seeking an artist or team of artist to help craft the look of the series and create a large number of portraits. This is a paid, full-time but short-term project.
• The Webcomic Library is a new resource that hopes to serve as a comprehensive list of webcomics. Submit your webcomic using this form.

•  Anime Milwaukee (February 14-16) is accepting applications for their artist alley until July 1.
• Big Easy Con (June 1-2) announced the rescheduling of their show today, May 10. The convention will now take place on November 1-3, NOT June 1-2.
• Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, or C2E2 (February 28 – March 1, 2020), is accepting artist alley applications until August 15.
•  Comic Arts LA (December 7-8) will be accepting applications until June 30.

• PEN America’s grants for writers and translators are now accepting applications.
•  The Louise Meriwether First Book Prize is currently accepting fiction and narrative fiction from women of color and nonbinary writers of color until today, June 28. One winner will be awarded a $5,000 advance (half at the time of the initial award and half upon publication) and a contract to publish their book with the Feminist Press in print and digital editions in spring 2021.
• The Mo Siewcharran Prize is accepting submissions from previously unpublished BAME authors until July 12. Prize winners will receive cash prizes and the opportunity to be published by Dialogue Books.
• Applications are open for the Cupcake Award until July 30. The winner of the award will receive $250 to print a new minicomic, a free half table at next year’s CAKE (where their minicomic will debut), and the mentor support of CAKE’s special guest judge.

•  Blue Literary Magazine, a small press by and for sapphic women & nonbinary individuals, has a rolling submission policy. Their next issue is titled “supercut”, and all submissions up until the end of June will be considered for said issue. They are also seeking submissions for the Price of Violets Chapbook Contest, with the first place winner receiving $200 and ten copies of their published chapbook. There is a $25 submission fee, but fees will be waived for those coming from Paper Cat via email request.
•  Horror Collective Artemisia’s Axe is accepting submissions to their pride-themed horror zine NEON HORROR until June 30. Comics, illustrations, short stories, flash fiction, and collages from the LGBTQIA+ community are welcome. Contributors will be paid 25 pounds, with additional compensation depending on the success of funding. Contributors will also receive three zines and a PDF for self-printing.
