Awards

The Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation Through Adversity is accepting applications from US libraries and staff who overcome adversity and create lasting innovative community service programs that successfully inspire and connect with new readers. A $10,000 cash award will be given to a US library, and four runners-up will receive $1,000 in Penguin Random House books.

endingbutton_4 The Oregon Book Awards is accepting applications from Oregon-based cartoonists and graphic novelists for its 2020 Graphic Literature Award until September 23. The award is only given every other year due to lack of entries, so please submit your work!

button_new3 The Lambda Literary Awards are accepting entries until November 15. There is an entrance fee of $55.

button_new3 The 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards is accepting submissions until November 27 (6PM PST). Each submission requires a separate entry form and a $100 processing fee payable to GLAAD; reduced fees or hardship waivers can be requested. More information about submissions can be found here.

The Ladies of Horror Fiction Awards is accepting submissions of works of horror created by women (cis or trans) until December 31. The awards will be announced in 2020.

The Ripped Bodice Awards for Excellence in Romantic Fiction will announce its winners on February 14, 2020. While there is no formal submissions process and judges are tasked with making note of memorable romance fiction, you are welcome to submit your work for consideration.

Crowdfunded Projects

yokokabutton_new3 Chris Riley is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish Yokoka’s Quest – Volume 1. Currently available to read online as a webcomic, this first volume aims to collect the first three chapters of the RPG-themed fantasy adventure into a full-color comic. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, bookmarks, a mini print, a sticker sheet, a poster, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on September 27.

Cloudscape Comics is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Life Finds A Way. The 180-page full-color comics anthology explores finding hope and renewal in a post-apocalyptic world, and features the talents of 37 creators. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, postcards, stickers, and past Cloudscape books. The Kickstarter ends on September 28.

Artist Cameron Lucente is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Unfamiliar Skies: Zodiac Poetry and Illustration. The 32-page book will be riso printed in yellow, black, light gray, and steel inks, and includes a riso-printed belly band. Tier options include digital and physical copies of Unfamiliar Skies, digital copies of Cameron’s recent poetry and comic work, and enamel pins. The Kickstarter ends on September 30.

Zainab Akhtar of ShortBox is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to print a comic collection by Rosemary Valero-O’Connell titled Don’t Go Without Me. The three included comics, Don’t Go Without Me, What is Left, and Con Temor, Con Ternura, feature themes of love, loss, connection, and acceptance, and collectively make up 110 pages of color comics. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book. The Kickstarter ends on October 2.


smutpeddlersilverbutton_new3 NSFW! Iron Circus Comics is currently raising funds to publish Smut Peddler Presents: Silver. The full-color comic anthology features 15 artists whose comics feature more mature, elderly subjects engaging in consensual, smut-filled fun. Tier options include Smut Peddler: Silver in digital and physical forms, and past editions of Smut Peddler books. The Kickstarter ends on October 2.

Beth Zyglowicz is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Lanterns of Arcadia – Volume 1. The ongoing webcomic tells the story of a dragon and a scientist who team up to stop demons from destroying a magical library. The book features over 170 pages of full color comics, as well as a book-exclusive epilogue, character guide, and concept art and sketches. Tier option include digital and physical copies of the book, prints, original artwork, and a cameo. The Kickstarter ends on October 3.

POMEgranate Magazine is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Ukelele Spells: Coda. This ukelele lesson book told in comic form also shares practical and fun spells. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, digital copies of sheet music, and digital and physical copies of POMEmag’s past books. The Kickstarter ends on October 4.

Comic artist Indira is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish Sacrimony Chapter 2. To quote the Kickstarter project page, Sacrimony is “a character driven, slice-of-life, fantasy drama that explores various types of love in all its glorious and terrifying forms.” Tier options include digital and physical copies of this second chapter of Sacrimony, digital and physical copies of chapter one, digital wallpapers, stickers, prints, a t-shirt, and more. The Kickstarter ends on October 4.

Anathema is currently raising funds on IndieGoGo to funds its fourth year. The tri-annual magazine of speculative fiction (SF/F/H, the weird, slipstream, surrealism, fabulism, and more) exclusively publishes the work of people of color (POC)/Indigenous/Aboriginal creators on every range of the LGBTQIA spectrum. All funds are put towards paying contributors and maintaining the website. Perks of backing the campaign include one-year, two-year, and lifelong subscriptions to Anathema, story critiques, and signed fiction anthologies. The campaign ends on October 5.

button_new3 Comic artist Emily Ree is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish Marshmallow Horns: Volume 2. Set in the universe of Ree’s webcomic Anarchy DreamersMarshmallow Horns follows students from Sacred Heart High School as they find love and acceptance in the aftermath of a tragedy. Tier options include digital and physical copies of Marshmallow Horns: Volume 2, and a physical copy of Volume 1. The Kickstarter ends on October 5.

button_new3 Eunsoo Namkung Jeong is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce updated editions of zines and new, larger zines of her series KOREANGRY. The zines use armatures and sculptures to deliver pointed, rage-filled commentary on sexist scenarios, culture, and more. Tier options include digital and physical copies of zine issues 1 through 7, a handmade mini kimchi jar, and stickers. The Kickstarter ends on October 7.

button_new3 Cortney Cameron is currently raising funds to print Catians: Chapter 1. To quote the campaign page, “Three teens inherit powers from an ancient cat deity and must learn to work with each other – and a band of talking cats – to defeat a sentient blob.” Tier options include digital and physical copies of Chapter 0 and Chapter 1, an art print, a cameo, and a credit as Executive Producer. The Kickstarter ends on October 9.

The art anthology features 33 artists whose takes on legendary women and the people who love them fill the 76-page book with full-spread artwork. Mentorships & Fellowships

  • Margot Atwell, the Head of Publishing at Kickstarter, is offering 2 mentorships this fall to those in the first five years of their publishing career.
  • The ABR Indigenous Fellowship, worth $10,000, is accepting proposals from emerging or established Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander writers, journalists, commentators, scholars, activists, and creative writers until October 1.  The fellowship recipient will be expected to contribute three high-quality nonfiction articles to the Australian Book Review.
