Awards

Nilah Magruder shared this Illustration Awards Masterlist. Wow. Scroll down to the Resources section to see even more that Nilah has contributed to the community for free. Thank you so much, Nilah!

The Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation Through Adversity is accepting applications from US libraries and staff who overcome adversity and create lasting innovative community service programs that successfully inspire and connect with new readers. A $10,000 cash award will be given to a US library, and four runners-up will receive $1,000 in Penguin Random House books.

The Lambda Literary Awards are accepting entries until November 15. There is an entrance fee of $55.

The 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards is accepting submissions until November 27 (6PM PST). Each submission requires a separate entry form and a $100 processing fee payable to GLAAD; reduced fees or hardship waivers can be requested. More information about submissions can be found here.

The Ladies of Horror Fiction Awards is accepting submissions of works of horror created by women (cis or trans) until December 31. The awards will be announced in 2020.

The Ripped Bodice Awards for Excellence in Romantic Fiction will announce its winners on February 14, 2020. While there is no formal submissions process and judges are tasked with making note of memorable romance fiction, you are welcome to submit your work for consideration.

Crowdfunded Projects


anathemay04

Anathema is currently raising funds on IndieGoGo to funds its fourth year. The tri-annual magazine of speculative fiction (SF/F/H, the weird, slipstream, surrealism, fabulism, and more) exclusively publishes the work of people of color (POC)/Indigenous/Aboriginal creators on every range of the LGBTQIA spectrum. All funds are put towards paying contributors and maintaining the website. Perks of backing the campaign include one-year, two-year, and lifelong subscriptions to Anathema, story critiques, and signed fiction anthologies. The campaign ends on October 5.

Comic artist Emily Ree is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish Marshmallow Horns: Volume 2. Set in the universe of Ree’s webcomic Anarchy DreamersMarshmallow Horns follows students from Sacred Heart High School as they find love and acceptance in the aftermath of a tragedy. Tier options include digital and physical copies of Marshmallow Horns: Volume 2, and a physical copy of Volume 1. The Kickstarter ends on October 5.

Eunsoo Namkung Jeong is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce updated editions of zines and new, larger zines of her series KOREANGRY. The zines use armatures and sculptures to deliver pointed, rage-filled commentary on sexist scenarios, culture, and more. Tier options include digital and physical copies of zine issues 1 through 7, a handmade mini kimchi jar, and stickers. The Kickstarter ends on October 7.

Cortney Cameron is currently raising funds to print Catians: Chapter 1. To quote the campaign page, “Three teens inherit powers from an ancient cat deity and must learn to work with each other – and a band of talking cats – to defeat a sentient blob.” Tier options include digital and physical copies of Chapter 0 and Chapter 1, an art print, a cameo, and a credit as Executive Producer. The Kickstarter ends on October 9.

MJ Alexander is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish The Stoop-Gallants Volume 1. To quote the Kickstarter project page, “The Stoop-Gallants is an adventure fantasy webcomic about the foibles of magic users who honestly never intended to use magic.” This volume collects the first 230+ full-color pages of the webcomic. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, stickers, prints, a bonus comic, and a Skype session. The Kickstarter ends on October 9.

BadCo Press is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce My Girlfriend From the Legends. The art anthology features 33 artists whose takes on legendary women and the people who love them fill the 76-page book with full-spread artwork. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, pins, prints, and an oil painting commission. The Kickstarter ends on October 13.

Comic artist Melissa Capriglione is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish Falconhyrste Volume 1. To quote the Kickstarter project page, “Falconhyrste is a young adult LGBT+ fantasy comic that deals with magic, friendship, and the dangers of authority.” This volume will collect the first 168 pages of the webcomic into a paperback, full-color comic book. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, guest artist prints, a sticker sheet, a lanyard, acrylic charms, a commission, and a cameo. The Kickstarter ends on October 16.

S.M. Beiko is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish (through Bedside Press) Gothic Tales of Haunted Futures, the follow-up to 2018’s Gothic Tales of Haunted Love. To quote the project page, “Gothic Tales of Haunted Futures features 18 original stories, casting the indelible themes of gothic romance forward in time, to imagined futures and tomorrow’s afterlives.” Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, copies of Gothic Tales of Haunted Love, mini prints, larger prints, and digital commissions. The Kickstarter ends on October 16.

Rhiannon R.S. is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish The Illustrated Field Guide to Monster Boys. The 32-page art book features 12 watercolor paintings by artist Cap O’Rushes accompanied by field notes written by Rhiannon R.S. describing each subject. With layout design by Shi Briggs and gold foil stamping, the art book promises to delight all who love monster boy pin-ups. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, stickers, and a commission by artists Cap O’rushes. The Kickstarter ends on October 19.

button_new3 Cartoonist Timothy Taylor is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of Holler. The all-ages 25-page comic features Peter, a smart but bullied child who befriends a tentacled alien and tries to save it from government exploitation. Tier options include a digital image packet, a postcard, a print, digital and physical copies of the comic, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on October 25.

  • Masha Gunic of the Azantian Literary Agency is open to graphic novel submissions!
  • The Comics Workforce Study is now available. Thank you Sasha Bassett for all of your work in collecting and parsing this data!
  • button_new3 Threadless is accepting artwork for the following design challenges: Grandma’s House, until October 4; and Snuggles, until October 11.
  • The next #DVPit events will take place on October 28 (kids/YA) and October 29 (adult/#DVArt). Find out more about #DVPit here.
  • button_new3 Hiraeth is accepting submissions from illustrators until October 28. The art anthology will be paid, but it is not stated how payments will be distributed or measured.
  • button_new3 Blick is hosting a Pen and Ink Contest celebrating #inktober. Submit your inked works by October 31 for a chance to win a prize pack worth more than $400.
  • button_new3 InQluded is accepting submissions of poetry, prose, music, and art from QTIBIPoC youth (roughly 14-28) with the theme “love” until November 1.
  • MediBang Paint is hosting its 1st Jump’s Universal Illustration Contest. Submit fanart of Naruto, Boruto, or Samurai 8 by November 12 for a chance to win up to 100,000 JPY, a signed color illustration, and comments from Masashi Kishimoto.
  • button_new3 The ART street Monthly Art competition is accepting entries with the theme “Halloween” until November 29.
  • The 13th Silent Manga Audition, in collaboration with UNESCO Asia & Pacific Regional Bureau for Education, is accepting submissions of manga-style comics with the theme “together for peace” until January 31, 2020.
  • MediBang Paint is hosting a Carole and Tuesday Fanart Contest. Submit fanart of the series by February 28, 2020 for an opportunity to win up to 100,000 yen prize money and comments from the judges (Shinichiro Watanabe, Minami Masahiko, and Tsunemori Saito).
  • Top Cow is hosting a Talent Hunt for previously unpublished writers and artists. Submit by February 28, 2020 for consideration.

  • Children aged 3-18 are invited to submit artwork to the Space Foundation’s International Student Art Contest. Submit artwork with the theme “how exploring space improves life on earth” by November 18 for a chance at recognition and prizes with cash values of up to $1,200.
