News

  • Paper Cat Press now has an official mailing list! Sign up here and get notified whenever a new Weekly Roundup goes live.
  • button_new3 SmackJeeves is reformatting their website on December 2 and removing custom domains and templates. They’re also cancelling their subscription model and refunding current subscribers.
  • Supporters of Kickstarter United can look to this page for ideas on how to show their support. NOTE: Paper Cat Press supports the union and will follow their lead in the use of Kickstarter.
  • SPX has created a legal aid fund in support of 11 indie artists and an indie publisher who are faced with a defamation lawsuit because they spoke out against another creator’s alleged pattern of sexual abuse. Please support their cause and send the message that survivors of sexual assault do not feel afraid to speak out against their abusers and supporters of victims should not pay for an abuser’s crimes.

Awards

The Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation Through Adversity is accepting applications from US libraries and staff who overcome adversity and create lasting innovative community service programs that successfully inspire and connect with new readers. A $10,000 cash award will be given to a US library, and four runners-up will receive $1,000 in Penguin Random House books.

The 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards is accepting submissions until November 27 (6PM PST). Each submission requires a separate entry form and a $100 processing fee payable to GLAAD; reduced fees or hardship waivers can be requested. More information about submissions can be found here.

The Ladies of Horror Fiction Awards is accepting submissions of works of horror created by women (cis or trans) until December 31. The awards will be announced in 2020.

The Massachusetts Book Awards are accepting fiction, nonfiction, poetry, children’s picture book, early reader books, and middle grade/young adult literature by residents of Massachusetts until December 31, 2019 (postmark date).

The Ladies Do Comics Award is accepting submissions of long form graphic novels in process from women in the UK. Digital forms must be submitted by January 5, 2020 and printed books must be received by January 26, 2020.

The Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic is accepting novel-length books and short fiction by Canadian authors published in 2019 until January 31, 2020.

button_new3 The 2020 Excellence in Graphic Literature Awards is accepting submissions of fiction and nonfiction graphic novels published in 2019 until February 1, 2020.

The Ripped Bodice Awards for Excellence in Romantic Fiction will announce its winners on February 14, 2020. While there is no formal submissions process and judges are tasked with making note of memorable romance fiction, you are welcome to submit your work for consideration.

button_new3 The SFWA Nebula Awards are accepting nominations from Active, Lifetime Active, and Associate SFWA members in good standing until February 15, 2020, 11:59pm PST.

The Myriad First Graphic Novel Competition is accepting submissions of graphic novels in process from creators who have not yet published a full-length graphic work until February 28, 2020.

Crowdfunded Projects

endingbutton_4 Cantina Publishing is currently raising funds to publish Silk and Steel, a queer SF/F adventure anthology of high femmes and dashing swordswomen. Featuring 9 authors with 6 illustrators set as stretch goals, the anthology project hopes to open submissions depending on further funding. Tier options include digital and physical books, art cards, mini mentoring sessions, query critique packages, and more. The campaign ends on November 25.

endingbutton_4 Artist K. Lynn Smith is currently raising funds to produce For Goodness Sake Volume One. Cursed and increasingly demonic Thatcher winds up traveling the country with free-spirited Rayne, who believes there might be a way to cure him. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the comic, enamel pins, commissions, model heads, and a 1/6 Thatcher doll. The campaign ends on November 28.

button_new3 Artist Abi Stevens is currently raising funds to produce Fantastical Illustrated Stickers & Rainbow Hot-foiled Prints. Based on creatures of folklore from East Anglia, the two  Black Shuck and Dragon of Bures are featured in this mini-collection. Tier options includes one or both sticker designs. The campaign ends on November 28.

Atthis Arts, LLC, is currently raising funds to publish its third anthology Community of Magic Pens. The book will collect new original flash fiction and short stories centered around joy, hope, community, and magic pens. Tier options include digital and paperback copies of the book, copies of all three Atthis Arts anthologies, a limited edition hardcover, and custom flash fiction by anthology editor E.D.E. Bell. The campaign ends on November 30.

Kaitlin Willians is currently raising funds to cover costs for the publication of Name & None Issue 3. A magazine by and for trans/non-binary/non-cis community, Name and None seeks to support, celebrate, and elevate creators often overlooked by mainstream publications. Tier options include early access to the magazine and a postcard. The campaign ends on November 30.

Creatively Queer Press is currently raising funds to cover the publishing costs of Cuentos: A Bilingual Latinx+ Illustrated Story Anthology. Featuring primarily Latinx artists, Cuentos showcases their artistic interpretations of the various monsters and myths found across Latin America, Spain, and the Philippines, and then presents them for a modern audience. Tier options include digital and physical copies of Cuentos, a copy of Eye of the Beholder, a print, an original watercolor sketch, and many thanks. The campaign ends on December 1.

Clarissa Redwine, formerly of Kickstarter, is currently raising funds to produce Solidarity Onboarding. The kit contains tools to open the conversation about organizing workspaces in the tech industry, and includes a booklet with common anti-labor statements made by companies, an enamel pin, a pencil, and a sticker. Tier options include the kit and a show of support for the upcoming free digital edition of the kit’s booklet. The campaign ends on December 2.

Featuring artwork and short stories from 18 LGBTQIA+ contributors, each piece embraces themes of horror and bright neon color palettes. Tier options include digital and physical prints of the zine, a hard enamel pin, and stickers. The campaign ends on December 12.

button_new3 TO Comix Press is currently raising funds to publish comic anthology Wayward Kindred. With 17 stories exploring stories about “family” and featuring monsters told in over 200 full-color comic pages, Wayward Kindred promises to be an affecting collection. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, prints, past TO Comix titles, and commissions. The campaign ends on December 13.

Comic creator G. E. Gallas is currently raising funds on Unbound to publish The Plague and Doctor Caim. Following the life of a 17th-century plague doctor, The Plague and Doctor Caim explores the history of the Black Plague and its treatment in a fictional macabre comedy. Tier options include the hardback book, the ebook, a bookmark, postcards, and linocut prints.

Con or Bust is seeking volunteers to join their Board as a an Interim President and Treasurer, as well as seasonal volunteers. Con or Bust aims to provide free tickets and travel grants to fans of color who want to attend SFF cons.

  • The Nobrow Short Story Competition is accepting submissions around the theme “The censor” until December 9. The overall winner will receive £2000, and all selected contributors will receive £150, two complimentary copies of the book, and will be invited to attend events including a launch and readings.
  • FIYAH Lit Mag is accepting unthemed prose and poetry submissions until December 31.
  • Rebuilding Tomorrow is accepting prose submissions that feature disabled and/or chronically ill protagonists rebuilding society and living their life a significant time after an apocalyptic disaster. Submissions are open until January 31, 2020.
