  • button_new3 This month, the lawyers of Inktober creator Jake Parker began issuing Cease and Desist letters to artists whose works use the word or logo for “inktober.” Some works were removed by marketplaces such as Amazon following copyright complaints. Jake Parker issued a statement following online backlash.
  • Kickstarter United has received several commitments from Kickstarter management indicating a fair process moving forward with union negotiations and has agreed to a media blackout as a show of good faith.
  • Supporters of Kickstarter United can look to this page for ideas on how to show their support. NOTE: Paper Cat Press supports the union and will follow their lead in the use of Kickstarter.
  • SPX has created a legal aid fund in support of 11 indie artists and an indie publisher who are faced with a defamation lawsuit because they spoke out against another creator’s alleged pattern of sexual abuse. Please support their cause and send the message that survivors of sexual assault do not feel afraid to speak out against their abusers and supporters of victims should not pay for an abuser’s crimes.

The Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation Through Adversity is accepting applications from US libraries and staff who overcome adversity and create lasting innovative community service programs that successfully inspire and connect with new readers. A $10,000 cash award will be given to a US library, and four runners-up will receive $1,000 in Penguin Random House books.

endingbutton_4 The Ladies of Horror Fiction Awards is accepting submissions of works of horror created by women (cis or trans) until December 31. The awards will be announced in 2020.

endingbutton_4 The Massachusetts Book Awards are accepting fiction, nonfiction, poetry, children’s picture book, early reader books, and middle grade/young adult literature by residents of Massachusetts until December 31 (postmark date).

The Ladies Do Comics Award is accepting submissions of long form graphic novels in process from women in the UK. Digital forms must be submitted by January 5, 2020 and printed books must be received by January 26, 2020.

The Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic is accepting novel-length books and short fiction by Canadian authors published in 2019 until January 31, 2020.

The 2020 Excellence in Graphic Literature Awards is accepting submissions of fiction and nonfiction graphic novels published in 2019 until February 1, 2020.

The Ripped Bodice Awards for Excellence in Romantic Fiction will announce its winners on February 14, 2020. While there is no formal submissions process and judges are tasked with making note of memorable romance fiction, you are welcome to submit your work for consideration.

The SFWA Nebula Awards are accepting nominations from Active, Lifetime Active, and Associate SFWA members in good standing until February 15, 2020, 11:59pm PST.

The Myriad First Graphic Novel Competition is accepting submissions of graphic novels in process from creators who have not yet published a full-length graphic work until February 28, 2020.

Crowdfunded Projects


button_new3 endingbutton_4 Alex Gillis is currently raising funds to publish The Nutcracker Zine: An Illustrated Ensemble. Featuring over 70 pages of artwork by 9 artists, the perfect bound book features over 40 pages of full-color artwork. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the zine, digital wallpapers, stickers, prints, and a bonus mini zine. The campaign ends on December 31.

Conventions and Events

Con or Bust is seeking volunteers to join their Board as a an Interim President and Treasurer, as well as seasonal volunteers. Con or Bust aims to provide free tickets and travel grants to fans of color who want to attend SFF cons.

  • AwesomeCon (Washington D.C., May 1-3, 2020) is currently accepting applications for its Artist Alley, Pride Alley, and Makers Market.
  • FanX (Salt Lake City, UT; September 17-19, 2020) has artist alley and exhibitor spaces available.
  • The Hill City Comics and Zine Fair (Lynchburg, VA; March 21, 2020) is accepting table applications until January 3, 2020.
  • LightBox Expo (Pasadena, CA; September 11-13, 2020) is accepting table applications until 9PM PST on January 31, 2020.
  • QFX East (Tampa, FL; May 29-31, 2020) is currently accepting vendor applications. They’re also accepting panel submissions.

Fan Zines

  • TEAMWORK! A Promare Fan Zine is accepting applications from artists through January 3, 2020. The zine is for profit. Contributors will receive a copy of the zine and its additional merch.

Mentorships & Fellowships

  • endingbutton_4 Permission to Write’s mentorship program is accepting Black writers and writers of color as mentees until December 31.
  • (Brooklyn, NY) A Public Space is accepting applications for its Editorial Fellowship program through January 15, 2020. Accepted fellows will be expected to spend 15 hours a week at A Public Space from March 15 through December 15, and will receive a $10,000 stipend.
  • The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is accepting applications for the 2020 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowships in Craft/Sculpture, Digital/Electronic Arts, Nonfiction Literature, Poetry, and Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts until January 22, 2020. Applicants must be over the age of 25 and living in the State of New York, among other restrictions. 
  • Tessera Editorial is accepting mentee applications for their Editor-In-Training Mentorship Program.

Residencies, Retreats, and Workshops

  • endingbutton_4 (Homer, AK) The Storyknife Residency is accepting applications from “woman-identified or nonbinary” writers for 2- or 4-week long residencies until December 31.
  • (Bronx, NYC) The Kundiman Retreat for Asian American writers at Fordham University is accepting applications until January 15, 2020. There is a $25 application fee and non-refundable tuition fee of $375 for those accepted. Scholarships are available.
  • button_new3 The 2020 San Francisco Redbubble Residency is now accepting applications and creative proposals until January 31, 2020. Selected residents will receive $3,000 a month but are responsible for their own moving and housing expenses.
  • button_new3 Lambda Literary’s 2020 Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Voices is accepting applications until February 3, 2020. There is an application fee of $25, and total fee of $1,725 (not including travel) with scholarships available.
