News

  • Paper Cat Press now has an official mailing list! Sign up here and get notified whenever a new Weekly Roundup goes live.
  • SPX has created a legal aid fund in support of 11 indie artists and an indie publisher who are faced with a defamation lawsuit because they spoke out against another creator’s alleged pattern of sexual abuse. Please support their cause and send the message that survivors of sexual assault do not feel afraid to speak out against their abusers and supporters of victims should not pay for an abuser’s crimes.

Awards and Prizes

Nilah Magruder shared this Illustration Awards Masterlist. Scroll down to the Resources section to see even more that Nilah has contributed to the community for free. Thank you so much, Nilah!

The Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation Through Adversity is accepting applications from US libraries and staff who overcome adversity and create lasting innovative community service programs that successfully inspire and connect with new readers. A $10,000 cash award will be given to a US library, and four runners-up will receive $1,000 in Penguin Random House books.

The 2020 Ringo Awards are now accepting nominations.

The 2020 World Fantasy Awards are accepting submissions of fantasy books and magazines published in 2019. Materials should be received before May 31 (as soon as possible).

SPX is accepting comic PDFs only for the 2020 Ignatz Awards until June 1.

The Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards, also known as the Ringo Awards, are accepting nominations until June 25.

The Broken Pencil Zine Awards are accepting submissions of zines made between April 2019 and June 2020 until July 1. Current Broken Pencil members can submit up to three zines for $14, and non-members must pay $25 for their first entry, an additional $10 for their second entry, and an additional $7 for their third.

We Need Diverse Books is accepting submissions to the 2021 Walter Awards for Outstanding Children’s Literature until November 16. Submissions must be diverse works created my diverse authors, and fit into the category of either “Teen” or “Younger Readers.”


Crowdfunded Projects

Nova and their wife Mali are raising funds to produce Lady Tarot Cards, an LGBT+ and POC Inclusive Tarot Deck. The tarot deck includes 78 cards featuring women and non-binary people, each illustrated by one of 44 LGBT women and nonbinary artists from across the globe. Reward options include the tarot card set; a digital booklet with all the art, tarot card meanings, and artist bios; a metallic print; a sticker of an embroidered design; and clear acrylic charms. The campaign ends on May 30.

Comics, Illustration, and More

  • DisabledCartoonists.com has launched! Submissions at CartoonistsofColor.com and QueerCartoonists.com have reopened. Thank you Mari Naomi and Cameron for all of your work in creating and maintaining these priceless resources!
  • The results of the Comics Workforce Study 2019 is now available. Thank you Sasha Bassett for all of your work in collecting and parsing this data!
  • button_new3 Threadless is currently running the following design challenges: Everyday Heroes Pt. 2, due May 29Endless Summer, due June 5; and Modern Classics, due June 12.
  • button_new3 inQluded issue 6 is accepting submissions with the theme “blue” until May 29. Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, music, visual art, comics, interviews, and more!
  • Arledge Comics is seeking submissions for mixed media anthology What’s Left until May 31. Submissions of comics (black and white or grayscale), short stories, poems, illustrations, or photographs are welcome. Proceeds will fund microgrants for creators impacted by COVID-19.
  • Obsolete Comics is accepting submissions of 1-6 page comics that explore what changes, and what doesn’t, in times of crisis for an upcoming anthology until May 31. The anthology will be distributed digitally for free, and all profits made through the sale of the anthology will be donated to UK homelessness charity Crisis.
  • Penn State University Press is accepting comics about COVID-19 for its upcoming anthology, to be launched along with its new Graphic Mundi imprint in early 2021. They ask that artists who are willing—and in a position to do so—donate their work to this project, non-exclusively. To pay that forward, Penn State University Press will donate net proceeds from sales of the volume to organizations that support artists and retailers in need. Pitches are needed by June 1.
  • Slasher Fashion, a zine featuring slasher and/or horror-themed OCs set in a fashion magazine/lookbook theme, is accepting applications until June 1. Profits will be split between contributors.
  • button_new3 Gender Unbound is commissioning new artwork from transgender and intersex visual artists on the theme of “home.” Submit by noon on June 5 for consideration.
  • button_new3 MediBang Paint and PRiNCETON are holding a Package Illustration Contest. Design a pink-themed character that complements the green, blue, and white characters for a chance at a cash award and an opportunity to have your artwork on packaging. Submit by June 29 for consideration.
  • Webtoon is hosting a short story contest. Submit 3-5 episodes with 30+ panels per episode, with a story that is either mind-bending or heartfelt, between April 30 and June 30 for a chance to win up to $15,000 and be published in an anthology.
  • Bonfire Comics is accepting submissions of comics between 1 and 16 pages in length with the theme “dreams” until July 15. Contributors will be paid $15/page.
  • The Silent Manga Audition is accepting submissions with the theme “creatures, spirits, and monsters” until July 30.
  • WildStar Press is open to family-friendly short story submissions until July 31.

Many conventions and major events have been cancelled due to travel restrictions, guest cancellations, and preventative responses to the spread of coronavirus.   • button_new3 endingbutton_4 Studio Chiffon is seeking pitches from LGBT writers for a short urban fantasy visual novel. The application may close as soon as May 22, so move quickly!
  • button_new3 inQluded issue 6 is accepting submissions with the theme “blue” until May 29. Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, music, visual art, comics, interviews, and more!
  • FIYAH Lit Mag is accepting submissions of prose and poetry for October’s “joy” themed issue until May 30.
  • Speculative City is seeking fiction, poetry, and essays with the theme of Afrofuturism written by authors who are specifically of Black and/or African descent until June 1. Submit pieces under 5,500 words to submissions@speculativecity.com.
  • Dardishi Zine Issue 2 (a digital edition) is seeking submissions by Arab and North African womxn (inclusive of trans women, and non-binary and intersex people) on the theme of Healing. Accepted writers will be paid £50. Submit by June 5 for consideration.
  • Reclaim the Stars: A Latinx SFF Anthology is accepting submissions from Afro Latinx writers until July 15. One selected writer will be published in the anthology and will receive $1,600.
  • Lee and Low’s New Visions Award is accepting submissions of YA/Middle Grade novels and graphic novels from writers of color or Native/Indigenous writers until August 31.
  • Lee and Low’s New Voices Award is accepting submissions of children’s picture book manuscripts from writers of color or Native/Indigenous writers until August 31.
  • Nerve Endings: Smut and Nerve Endings: Romance are accepting submissions of short fiction addressing trans and non-binary experiences of sex, sexuality, and relationships. Submissions for Smut are due by July 5, and submissions for Romance are due by July 5, 2021.
