Awards and Prizes

  • Nilah Magruder shared this Illustration Awards Masterlist. Scroll down to the Resources section to see even more that Nilah has contributed to the community for free. Thank you so much, Nilah!
  • The Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation Through Adversity is accepting applications from US libraries and staff who overcome adversity and create lasting innovative community service programs that successfully inspire and connect with new readers. A $10,000 cash award will be given to a US library, and four runners-up will receive $1,000 in Penguin Random House books.
  • The Will Eisner Graphic Novel Grants for Libraries are now accepting applications through February 7. Two grants will provide support to two libraries that would like to expand their existing graphic novel services and programs; the other will provide support to a library for the initiation of a graphic novel service, program or initiative. Each grant recipient will receive $4,000 divided between different objectives.
  • button_new3 The Center for Cartoon Studies is accepting submissions of print comics and webcomics for the 9th Annual Cartoonist Studio Prize The winning creators in both categories will each receive $1,000 and a Wacom One Creative Pen Display. Works must be submitted by February 15.
  • The Prism Awards are accepting applications from queer authors with comics that promote representations of LGBTQIA+ characters through February 28.
  • The Eisner Awards is accepting submissions for consideration until March 15.

Crowdfunded Projects

werisefromourashes Illustrator Abi Stevens is currently raising funds to produce the We Rise From Ashes Pin. Tier options include one or two enamel pins. The campaign ends on February 11. theskyleftus The Event Horizon Crew is currently raising funds to produce The Sky Left Us. The sci-fi visual novel discusses climate change, classism, and how relationships shape our politics. Play as Spire Risan, an off-worlder scientist who becomes entangled in the drama of a mountain they came here to save. Reward options include the digital download of the game, the original soundtrack, an art book, a lore book, and a set of enamel pins. The campaign ends on February 18.

General/Misc.

  • Check out Paper Cat Press’s Holiday Market! I’ll be listing shops that sell hand-made items, including art or writing commissions, accessories, clothing, crafts, prints, and more. (Sign-up is now closed.)
  • Go Komikimok, a collective of SEA creators, is now open. They recently released a series of resources: “The Comic Creator’s Guide to Graphic Novel Pitch Packets” and “The Comic Creator’s Guide to Literary Agents.“
  • Abelle, the creator of the #DrawingWhileBlack hashtag, has moved the directory to AirTable. Please add your name if you are a Black artist!
  • If you’re a Filipino artist, add your name to the Filipino American Artist Directory!
  • ENBY Magazine is seeking a U.S. based QT(BIPOC preferred) individual who can work as a music manager, videographer, etc.
  • Kara created the hashtag #SmallArtistFair to help artists with shops and follower counts under 10,000.
  • button_new3 In February, Kickstarter is hosting its annual Zine Quest prompt encouraging creators RPG to life with maps, adventures, monsters, comics, articles, and interviews. To participate, launch a two-week project for a single-color unbound, folded, stapled, or saddle-stitched RPG zine on A5 or smaller paper. Kickstarter will promote projects Monday, February 1 and continue through the month.
  • #APIpit is a Twitter pitch event for Asian/Pasifika writers and illustrators during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The inaugural event will be held on May 4. Learn more here.
  • The first-ever #PitchDis, a Twitter pitch event for un-agented disabled authors, is coming Tuesday, June 22.
  • The Latinx Collective shared a directory of Latina and Latinx small business owners and collectives. Check it out!
  • WEBTOON will be extending the WEBTOON CANVAS Creator Rewards Program until the end of 2021. The current 100% net ad revenue support for CANVAS creators will continue until the end of June 2021.

Comics, Illustration, and More

  • DisabledCartoonists.com has launched! Submissions at CartoonistsofColor.com and QueerCartoonists.com have reopened. Thank you Mari Naomi and Cameron for all of your work in creating and maintaining these priceless resources!
  • The results of the Comics Workforce Study 2019 is now available. Thank you Sasha Bassett for all of your work in collecting and parsing this data!
  • button_new3 endingbutton_4 Quarterly gallery show Locus is accepting applications from literary and visual artists for LOCUS: VI until January 23. Selected contributors will be notified by January 25. Literary artists will have 3 weeks to submit a new or existing short work. Visual artists will receive that work on February 15 and will then have 3 weeks to create a new work inspired by, in response to, or interpreting the literary piece. Any artwork sold or tips given during the show, while assisted by the curator, are 100% profit kept by the artist.
  • endingbutton_4 The Silent Manga Audition is accepting comic submissions with the theme “Moments of Crying, Smiling, or Love” until January 27. The grand prize includes 500,000¥ and more!
  • endingbutton_4 Threadless is currently running the following design challenges: Illuminating and Ultimate Gray, due by January 29.
  • button_new3 The Nib is seeking short pitches on drug experiences and how you want to approach it within a 4-panel space. Pitches should be received by January 30.
  • Heebie-Jeebies, a horror comic anthology project, is accepting submissions until January 31. Contributors will receive a copy of the final printed anthology.
  • Oneshi Press is accepting submissions for a comic anthology based on the theme of “Becoming.” Artists or writers may submit individually and later be paired, or submit as a unit. Final works must be 8-page comics. All submissions of comics, scripts, poems, art portfolios, and cover art concepts must be received by April 7.
  • Clip Studio Paint is accepting submissions for its International Comic/Manga Schools Contest with the theme “Admiration” until April 29.

Conventions and Events

Many conventions and major events have been cancelled due to travel restrictions, guest cancellations, and preventative responses to the spread of coronavirus. Here is a list of cancelled and postponed conventions. Please check in frequently with any event you have planned through 2021. And, as always, wash your hands.

Mentorships & Fellowships

  • button_new3 Comics writer and illustrator Nilah Magruder is offering a graphic novel mentorship most ideal for middle-grade and young adult graphic novels. Mentees will spend six months developing a graphic novel pitch for publication and learning about the graphic novel industry. Black and Indigenous artists will be prioritized. Applications must be received by January 31 for consideration.

Residencies, Retreats, and Workshops

  • ViciousMinutesHour is accepting applications from Black Trans folk for two Artist-in-Residence positions. The artist-in-residence opportunity pays $225 CDN per week and serves as a space/time grant, providing an additional source of income for the general work applicants do as an artist.
  • endingbutton_4 Saltonstall is accepting applications for its free artist and writer residencies who are current residents of New York State and/or one of the Indian Nations located therein until January 23. Residencies occur from June 3 – October 30.
  • button_new3 endingbutton_4 (Oakland, CA) The Moments Co-Op is hosting two residencies: one for Black, Indigenous, POC led mutual aid & community based project over the course of one month, and one for parents and youth aged 16-24 over the course of three months. Apply by January 25 consideration.
  • The Desperate Literature Prize for Short Fiction is accepting submissions of original works of fiction under 2,000 words until April 15. Submissions cost €20 for the entry and €10 for every entry afterwards, with full-fee and half-fee sponsorships available. The first prize winner will receive €1500, a week’s residency at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, and a consultation with a Literary Agent from Andrew Nurnberg Associates.

Scholarships, Sponsorships, and Grants

  • The Arts and Culture Leaders of Color Emergency Fund is sending US-based BIPOC artists and art administrators whose income has been directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic payments of $200. Click the link to apply or to donate.
  • The Awesome Foundation offers $1000 grants on a rolling basis.
  • Black Rainbow offers microgrants of $300 to LGBQTI people of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community that includes $200 to assist with hosting Indigenous LGBTQI community events. (CURRENTLY ON PAUSE)
  • The California Arts Council is accepting applications for its new Individual Artist Fellowship Program. Approximately 130 artists will receive financial support of at least $5,000. Applications must be received by April 1.
  • The Covid-19 Aid Funds website lists funding opportunities.
  • The Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism is accepting applications from artists on a rolling basis. Artists covering data privacy, the 2018/2020 elections, the role of technology in society, political influence campaigns, harmful technologies, countering disinformation, and artificial intelligence may receive $500 to $5,000 in grants.
  • Gameheads is accepting submissions from young Black students interested in interactive entertainment and mixed media industries for their Black Video Game Scholars Program. The program begins January 30, so apply soon.
  • button_new3 The 2021 Good Story Grant, two grants of $1,500 with one delivered to BIPOC, is accepting applications from writers until January 31.
  • Gumroad’s Creators Fund is accepting applications on a rolling basis. Gumroad will be allocating $50,000 in creative grants of $500 to $5,000 throughout the year.
  • Are you a professional freelancer experiencing financial duress? The Haven Foundation offers grants and assistance to applicants with chronic illness or injury or other career-threatening emergencies (excluding COVID-19).
  • The Moonrise Fund, an early-stage equity fund backing ambitious creators, is offering $120,000 to $250,000 funds. Visit this page to learn more and apply.
  • My Documented Life maintains a list of scholarships for undocumented students.
  • PIVOT, a resource fund for Black artists in Ontario, is accepting applications from Black artists in Ontario adapting to the shifting expectations and requirements created by the proliferation of COVID-19. Apply for up to $1,000 in funding towards professional development, equipment, and other professional costs. Applications must be received by February 7.
  • Point of Pride has established the COVID-19 Emergency Fund to connect trans people to small grants for short-term expenses.
  • Canadian artists and cultural connectors are welcome to apply for grant funds through the Professional Development for Arts Professionals of Supporting Artistic Practice. Details on how and when you can apply are available on the page.
  • Springboard for the Arts offers an Emergency Relief Fund for personal and community disasters that affect artists in Minnesota. (CURRENTLY ON PAUSE)
  • Tulsa Remote is accepting applications from remote workers who are willing to relocate to Tulsa, OK in exchange for reduced rent and a total of $10,000 over the course of a year.

  • Panel Patter is looking for contributors, particularly from writers interested in manga and webcomics. They do not offer payment.
  • (New York, NY) Penguin Random House is seeking a Production Manager to work with SquareEnix on a growing list of titles comprising graphic novels (manga), trade novels, art books, and other publishing products.   • The Temper is seeking written works, particularly from marginalized writers, that relate to sobriety, addiction, or recovery.
