  • The Ignatz Awards are accepting submissions until June 1. Comic submissions must have been published between June 1, 2020 and May 30, 2021.
  • endingbutton_4 Voting is now open for the 2021 Will Eisner Comic Awards Hall of Fame. Voters will select 4 inductees from 16 nominees chosen by a panel of judges. Comic book/graphic novel/webcomic creators (writers, artists, cartoonists, pencillers, inkers, letterers, colorists); comic book/graphic novel publishers and editors; comics historians and educators; graphic novel librarians; and owners and managers of comic book specialty retail stores are invited to vote. The deadline to vote is June 4.
  • Voting for the Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards, also known as the Ringo Awards, is open until June 24.

Crowdfunded Projects

comradehimbo POMEpress is raising funds to publish Comrade Himbo – Comic Hunks for the Proletariat. Comrade Himbo is a 130+ page comics and illustration anthology full of pure-intentioned himbos of all genders, who are thicc of thigh and even thiccer of heart. This book is a lovingly crafted, all-art manifesto on the strength of community: 10 black & white comics and 9 full-color illustrations from 22 up-and-coming creators. Reward options include digital and/or physical copies of Comrade Himbo, a t-shirt, and past POMEpress books. The campaign ends May 31.
thedaythatfrozetheseaturtles Author Lauren Darnell is raising funds to publish The Day that Froze the Sea Turtles. Based on the deep freeze and snowstorm in Texas in February 2021, The Day that Froze the Sea Turtles fictionalizes the story of how gulf residents spent their days outside in the cold rescuing thousands of sea turtles. Reward options include a physical copy of the book, stickers, a bookmark, an activity guide, a gift tote, coloring pages, and an author visit and/or Zoom talk. The campaign ends on May 31.
destinyandtheunxplainables Kang Jing (KJ) is raising funds to publish Destiny and The UnXplainables: a 36-page comic book. The comic book features both stories in a 2-in-1 “flip” format, with both covers showing on either side. Reward options include a digital PDF edition of both comics, a printed copy, sketch card commissions, and A4 commission, and an A5 commission. The campaign ends on May 31.
letmeout Emmet Nahil is raising funds to publish LET ME OUT: A Queer Horror Graphic Novel. With the backdrop of rising Satanic Panic in 1979 New Jersey, LET ME OUT follows a group of queer & trans friends who are given the supernatural means to fight back against a bigoted town keen on blaming them for a recent chilling murder. The digital book features over 185 pages of full-color comics. Reward options include a digital wallpaper, the PDF of LET ME OUT, a print, an embroidered patch, a tote bag, a cameo in the comic, and editorial advice. The campaign ends on June 2.
magefrontbook1 SheaB is raising funds to publish Magefront: Book 1. The ongoing webcomic features Amarantha, a necromancer attending her first year at the College of Magic, and friends – and enemies – she makes along the way. This first volume will include the first 6 chapters for a total of 137 full-color pages (plus bonus story) in a softcover book. Reward options include digital and physical copies of Magefront, prints, stickers, a cameo in the book, a digital commission, or a traditional illustration. The campaign ends on June 12.
goldentrick NSFW! Nero O’Reilly is raising funds to publish GOLDEN TRICK, a full-color erotic graphic novel about sex, magic, and the subtle art of the con. In GOLDEN TRICK, Uther and Galahad are two con men are caught up in each other’s lives while trying to escape the walled city they’ve both grown up in. Reward options include a paerback copy of the 240-page graphic novel, a bookplate, mini prints, and an original inked page from the book. The campaign ends on June 13.

  • endingbutton_4 Swim On, a yearly digital art zine about sharks, is accepting artist applications until May 28. All proceeds will be donated to Shark Savers.
  • endingbutton_4 The ART Street Monthly Illustration Contest is accepting submissions with the theme “flower” until May 31. Prize money will be credited to the Medibang account you applied with. To receive the prize money, you need to register a PayPal account or your bank account information.
  • endingbutton_4 Radiator Comics and Black Josei Press are accepting comic submissions of 1-3 pages from solo creators and writer/artist duos in South Florida until May 31. The Sun and Sand Comic Anthology will be 28 pages long, available for free, and feature South Florida creators.
  • The Kyoto International Manga Anime Award is accepting submissions of comics from applicants who wish to be a manga artist or illustrator who makes a professional debut in Japan until July 26. Illustrators, submit here with your work themed “Travel to Kyoto.” Prizes include cash, an invite to the Kyoto International Anime Manga Fair (KYO-MAF), your work displayed at KYO-MAF, and a recommendation to all participating editorial departments in the Manga Business Trip Editorial Department at KYO-MAF.
  • The Silent Manga Audition is accepting textless comic entries between 5 and 17 pages in length with the theme “moments of fear, joy or love” until July 28.
  • button_new3 EMANATA is seeking young adult graphic novel submissions from agents representing comic artists living in Canada until August 30. Deaf and Disabled, POC, and 2SLGBTQIA+ creators are encouraged to submit with or without an agent.
  • WildStar Press is accepting pitch submissions (short stories or graphic novels; all genres; middle grade and older) until August 31. Mentorships & Fellowships

  • button_new3 New Grove Atlantic imprint Roxane Gay Books is seeking an editorial fellow interested in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of an independent publishing house and developing a solid foundation for a career in publishing. Fellows will receive a $25,000 stipend, for 24 hours a week of work, paid biweekly, for the duration of their one-year fellowship. The fellow is also eligible for health and dental benefits and paid time off. Candidates can be based anywhere in the United States and work remotely for now, though they hope to be in person again (New York, NY) in the coming months. Apply after June 1 and by June 15 for consideration.
  • The Letras Boricuas Fellowship is accepting applications from emerging and established Puerto Rican writers of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and children’s literature, both in Puerto Rico and from across the diaspora in the US, until June 20. Thirty writers will be selected — fifteen in 2021, and fifteen in 2022 — to receive $25,000 each. The Letras Boricuas Fellowship will have two cohorts.
  • Scholastic’s Art Mentorship Program is accepting applications from aspiring illustrators who identify as Black, Indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC) until June 25 at 11:59PM EST. The program will include portfolio critiques and workshopping, professional industry expectations from a hiring standpoint, and Q&A.

Residencies, Retreats, and Workshops

  • endingbutton_4 LitUp is accepting applications from diverse women writers who are also unagented and unpublished until May 30. LitUp will provide five emerging writers with an all-expenses-paid retreat, mentorship, and marketing support from Reese’s Book Club.
  • The Native Children’s and YA Writing Intensive is accepting applications on a rolling basis through June 15. Up to 20 participants will be invited to the intensive, which intends to offer an opportunity for reflection, conversation, celebration, and manuscript and career development. Registration is $100, but most participants will receive scholarship support.
  • button_new3 The Center for Cartoon Studies is accepting applications for the Cornish CCS Residency Fellowship. Residency dates for 2021 are October 15-November 15, and dates for 2022 are March 15-April 15. An honorarium of $3,000 will be provided. Applications must be received by July 1.
  • button_new3 (New York, NY) The Fall 2021 Residency at The Resort in Long Island City, Queens, is accepting applications from BIPOC and LGBTQ+ writers living in New York City who have signed up for the free online network community.theresortlic.com. Two writers will be awarded a free, dedicated writing desk at the Resort in Long Island City, Queens, for the period September 1 – October 31, 2021, which includes 24/7 Resort access, high speed wifi, seltzer/snacks, and a supportive community. The residency also includes free membership in the online Cabana Club for four months. Apply by July 16 for consideration.
  • ViciousMinutesHour is accepting applications from Black Trans folk for two Artist-in-Residence positions. The artist-in-residence opportunity pays $225 CDN per week and serves as a space/time grant, providing an additional source of income for the general work applicants do as an artist.

  • The Arts and Culture Leaders of Color Emergency Fund is sending US-based BIPOC artists and art administrators whose income has been directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic payments of $200. Click the link to apply or to donate.
  • button_new3 endingbutton_4 Applications have reopened for the Artist Relief fund, which will distribute $5,000 grants to artists facing dire financial emergencies due to COVID-19. Apply here by May 31 for consideration.
  • The Awesome Foundation offers $1000 grants on a rolling basis.
  • The City of West Hollywood is offering Arts Grants to individuals, nonprofits, groups, and/or collectives with the following program categories and deadlines:
    • The Arts Project Grant, available to eligible nonprofit arts organizations for the production, performance, or presentation of art projects that take place in the City of West Hollywood and that serve the West Hollywood community. Applications due July 1.
    • The Organizational Development Grant, supporting non-profit arts organizations with an interest in strengthening their organization’s infrastructure. Applications due July 1.
    • The Transgender Arts Initiative Grant, to support and enhance artwork to be presented or exhibited in West Hollywood by transgender artists. Individual artist, artist collectives or groups, and nonprofit organizations with a history of supporting transgender artists may apply. Applications due July 1.
    • endingbutton_4 The WeHo Artist Performance Grant, support resident performing artists while offering them the opportunity to share their talents with the community in an easily accessible way. Artists must live in West Hollywood to be eligible. The City will award seven grants with each grant total of $5,000. Applications due June 2.
  • The Covid-19 Aid Funds website lists funding opportunities.
  • The Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism is accepting applications from artists on a rolling basis. Artists covering data privacy, the 2018/2020 elections, the role of technology in society, political influence campaigns, harmful technologies, countering disinformation, and artificial intelligence may receive $500 to $5,000 in grants.
  • Foundry10 is awarding three $2,500 scholarships to students continuing enrollment for the 2021-2022 school year in the following categories: Technical School Returning Student, Community College Returning Student, University Undergraduate Returning Student and Graduate School Returning Student. Apply by June 15 for consideration.
  • Gumroad’s Creators Fund is accepting applications on a rolling basis. Gumroad will be allocating $50,000 in creative grants of $500 to $5,000 throughout the year.
  • Are you a professional freelancer experiencing financial duress? The Haven Foundation offers grants and assistance to applicants with chronic illness or injury or other career-threatening emergencies (excluding COVID-19).
  • I Need Diverse Games & McElroy Family Podcaster 101 Grants are accepting applications on a rolling basis from Black and POC podcasters (preferably beginners). Recipients will receive one of five bundles which include a Yeti Blue Microphone & a copy of “Everybody has a Podcast (Except You).”
  • The Moonrise Fund, an early-stage equity fund backing ambitious creators, is offering $120,000 to $250,000 funds. Visit this page to learn more and apply.

  • endingbutton_4 Escape Pod is accepting short science fiction submissions until the end of May.
  • Black Femme Collective is accepting creative nonfiction submissions written by and for Black queer femme storytellers with the theme “Wild” until June 13.
  • The Little, Brown Emerging Artist Award is accepting submissions from unpublished, unagented picture book creators until June 15. The winner will receive $1,500, receive a portfolio review, and will have their submission considered for publication.
  • Carnation Books is accepting submissions of queer winter holiday romances until June 30. Scrubbed fanfiction is welcome. Any winter holiday can be featured, and winter-centric romances with no religious holiday are also welcome. Submissions should be light-hearted with HEAs.
  • Through June 2021, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) is waiving fees for SFWA membership for Black writers. If you qualify for membership, are a Black writer, and would like to join the organization or renew your membership, please send an email to office@sfwa.org for more information.
  • Inclusive Future Magazine is accepting submissions of prose, poetry, art, and graphic design from trans, nonbinary, and genderqueer artists and writers until July 15. Selected contributors will be paid; pay amounts are available on the website.
  • The Analog Award for Emerging Black Voices is accepting hard sci-fi submissions of 1,000 to 5,000 words until July 23. Applicants should be writers over 18 who customarily identify Black, have not published and are not under contract for a book, and have three or less paid publications (additional unpaid publications okay). Analog editors commit to purchasing and publishing the winning story in Analog Science Fiction and Fact, with the intent of creating a lasting relationship, including one year of monthly mentorship sessions.
  • The Ann Petry Award is accepting submissions of previously unpublished prose, either a novel or a collection of short stories or novellas, with a minimum of 150 pages, by a Black writer. The awarded manuscript will be published by Red Hen Press, with its writer awarded $3,000, and a four-week residency at The Community Library’s Ernest and Mary Hemingway House in Ketchum, Idaho. Apply by July 30 for consideration.
  • FIYAH Lit Mag is accepting prose and poetry submissions with the theme Love, Death, and Androids until July 31.
  • Submissions are now open for the New Voices Award and the New Visions Award from Lee & Low Books. Winners of each award receive a $2,000 cash prize and a first time publishing contract with Lee & Low Books. Both writing contests are open to writers of color and Indigenous/Native writers who are residents of the United States and who have not previously had a children’s picture book published (for the New Voices Award), or have had a middle grade or young adult novel published (for the New Visions Award). Submissions are due by July 31.
  • Charlesbridge and TERC are seeking new picture book manuscripts for their “Storytelling Math” series. They are interested only in realistic, contemporary fiction featuring human characters of color, and are particularly interested in #ownvoices manuscripts by BIPOC authors. Manuscripts under 500 words work best for this series. Submit by August 1 for consideration.
  • Nerve Endings: Smut and Nerve Endings: Romance are accepting submissions of short fiction addressing trans and non-binary experiences of sex, sexuality, and relationships. Submissions for Romance are due by October 4 (extended).
  • The Barbellion Prize is accepting submissions of books published between November 2020 and October 31, 2021 until October 31. Eligibility for the prize is predicated on the author’s presentation of life with a long-term chronic illness or disability, whether that be in the form of blindness, MS, cystic fibrosis, dwarfism, or another comparable condition that may substantially define one’s life.
  • AbleGamers is looking for pitches about disability in video games to be featured in their newsletter and on the AbleGamers website. Financial compensation available for accepted pieces.
  • (New York, NY) Abrams Press is seeking a Senior Editor.
