  • The Lambda Literary Awards are accepting submissions of LGBTQ books until November 19 at 11:59 PM ET. Entry fees are $65 per book for small/independent presses and self-published books, if submitting 1-10 titles, or $55 per title if submitting 11 or more. Entry costs $75 per book for titles submitted by Big 5 publishers and their imprints.
  • endingbutton_4 The WEBTOON CANVAS Awards are accepting nominations of CANVAS series October 20 – 31. Voting will open December 6, with winners are announced on January 3, 2022.

Crowdfunded Projects

fantasticfrights button_new3 Cloudscape Comics is raising funds to publish Fantastic Frights: An all ages fantasy horror anthology. Fantastic Frights is a dreadfully delightful return to the pulp horror comic anthologies of the past, featuring 15 stories from more than 20 creators. The 140-page softcover comic anthology features interiors designed entirely in pink and blue duotone, allowing the artists to tell their stories in visually unique and unexpected ways. Reward options include digital and physical copies of Fantastic Frights, digital copies of Cloudscape’s horror anthologies, a pinup poster, a sticker pack, and more. The campaign ends on November 5.
adventureseverywhere Nathan Kempf is raising funds to publish Adventures Everywhere: A Comic-Book Anthology for Kids. Featuring over 100 pages of comics suited for kids and younger teens, Adventures Everywhere includes tales of adventure in both fantastical and contemporary settings. Reward options include digital and physical copies of the book, a bookmark, three postcard prints, a teacher’s guide, and a one-page feature for creators under 15. The campaign ends on November 15.

  • DisabledCartoonists.com has launched! Submissions at CartoonistsofColor.com and QueerCartoonists.com have reopened. Thank you Mari Naomi and Cameron for all of your work in creating and maintaining these priceless resources!
  • Blick is accepting submissions to their Pen and Ink Challenge until midnight CT on October 31. Five winners will each receive one set of 10 of the 100th Anniversary Sakura Pigma Micron Pens and one Sakura Pigma Art Set.
  • endingbutton_4 DEATH IN THE MOUTH will commission artists to create 6″ x 9″ black and white illustrations for its horror anthology and is accepting portfolio submissions until November 1.
  • DC Comics’ The Milestone Initiative is accepting applications from Black and other underrepresented creators who are ready to enter the comic book industry at a professional level. Participants in The Milestone Initiative will be invited to a one-week summit, hosted by WarnerMedia, DC, and Ally, where they’ll make connections, create community, and begin an immersive course to help hone creative skills and better understand the comic book industry. Apply by November 12 for consideration.
  • Arledge Comics is currently accepting applications for comics, short stories, and illustrations for Adorable Assistants: Tails Behind the Art. They’re also looking for artists for pin, sticker, and bookmark designs for Kickstarter rewards. Applications will close on December 1.
  • The Pokémon TCG Illustration Contest 2022 is accepting submissions from artists residing in Japan and the United States. Choose from eight different Pokémon and illustrate your chosen Pokémon living out a normal day in its life. Submit artwork between October 13 and January 31, 2022, at 6:59 PM for a chance to win up to $5,000 cash. Artists can submit up to three illustrations.
  • The Silent Manga Competition is accepting entries for its 17th contest with the theme “Moments of Haste, Rage, or Smiles.” Comics must be wordless and be submitted by January 31, 2022.

  • ViciousMinutesHour is accepting applications from Black Trans folk for two Artist-in-Residence positions. The artist-in-residence opportunity pays $225 CDN per week and serves as a space/time grant, providing an additional source of income for the general work applicants do as an artist.

  • The Arts and Culture Leaders of Color Emergency Fund is sending US-based BIPOC artists and art administrators whose income has been directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic payments of $200. Click the link to apply or to donate.
  • The Awesome Foundation offers $1,000 grants on a rolling basis.
  • endingbutton_4 The Blacktober Creator Fund is accepting applications until November 5. Ten Black/Mixed Black Creatives will be selected for a $100 grant courtesy of the funds raised by the Blacktober Community. Must be 18 or older to apply.
  • button_new3 endingbutton_4 The Constellation Award is accepting applications from independent literary presses that are led by and/or champion the writing of people of color, including Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and Asian American & Pacific Islander individuals. The inaugural recipient will receive an award of $10,000. Apply by November 5 for consideration.
  • The Covid-19 Aid Funds website lists funding opportunities.
  • endingbutton_4 Gender Reveal is awarding ten $500 grants to trans artists and activists of color. They are specifically looking for applicants whose work supports trans folks, people of color, or other marginalized communities, and/or whose work fosters exploration and celebration of gender diversity. Apply by 11:59pm PT on October 31 for consideration.
  • Gumroad’s Creators Fund is accepting applications on a rolling basis. Gumroad will be allocating $50,000 in creative grants of $500 to $5,000 throughout the year.
  • Are you a professional freelancer experiencing financial duress? The Haven Foundation offers grants and assistance to applicants with chronic illness or injury or other career-threatening emergencies (excluding COVID-19).
  • I Need Diverse Games & McElroy Family Podcaster 101 Grants are accepting applications on a rolling basis from Black and POC podcasters (preferably beginners). Recipients will receive one of five bundles which include a Yeti Blue Microphone & a copy of “Everybody has a Podcast (Except You).”
  • The Moonrise Fund, an early-stage equity fund backing ambitious creators, is offering $120,000 to $250,000 funds. Visit this page to learn more and apply.
  • endingbutton_4 The Otherwise Award (formerly the Tiptree Award) is accepting applications for the Otherwise Fellowships, providing $500 grants for “writers, artists, scholars, media makers, remix artists, performers, musicians, or something else entirely. If you are doing work that is changing the way we think about gender through speculative narrative – maybe in a form we would recognize as the science fiction or fantasy genre, maybe in some other way – you are eligible for a Fellowship.” The Otherwise Fellowships are awarded to two creators each year. Applications are due on October 31.
  • The Penguin Random House Creative Writing Awards is accepting applications from current US high school seniors until February 1, 2022 at 3pm CT or when 1,000 applications are received. Penguin Random House will award college scholarships of up to $10,000 each to five U.S. high school seniors, nationwide.
  • Canadian artists and cultural connectors are welcome to apply for grant funds through the Professional Development for Arts Professionals of Supporting Artistic Practice. Details on how and when you can apply are available on this page.
  • endingbutton_4 We Are Here Scotland’s Creators’ Fund are accepting applications from Black and POC artists and creatives across Scotland. Seven selected creators will receive along with one-to-one mentorship from experienced industry professionals as well as £500 each. Apply by October 31 at 11:59pm GMT for consideration.

  • Six to Start is seeking voice talent for a number of roles. They pay £50 GBP per hour, plus an additional £25 GBP set up fee for each recording session, and can pay in local currencies if preferred.

  • endingbutton_4 The Barbellion Prize is accepting submissions of books published between November 2020 and October 31, 2021 until October 31. Eligibility for the prize is predicated on the author’s presentation of life with a long-term chronic illness or disability, whether that be in the form of blindness, MS, cystic fibrosis, dwarfism, or another comparable condition that may substantially define one’s life.
  • endingbutton_4 Neon Hemlock is accepting submissions to Opulent Syntax: Irish Speculative Fiction until October 31.
  • endingbutton_4 Through October, Butter Press is accepting poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction submissions from queer, non-binary and transgender voices. All work should be sent by email. Please include a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file with an author bio in the body of the email. They encourage the inclusion of pronouns and portfolio/social media links.
  • endingbutton_4 Through October, EscapePod is accepting joyful stories that celebrate positive futures (or positive alternate pasts). They would especially like to see stories that embrace joy for demographics where pain is often centered (including but not limited to: people of marginalized genders or sexual preferences; people from historically oppressed or colonized cultures; people with disabilities). Happy endings are not mandatory, but some part of the story should evoke a smile.
  • endingbutton_4 ECW Press is seeking entries of unpublished novel manuscripts in English between 40,000 and 150,000 words by a Canadian author in the science fiction, fantasy, or speculative fiction genres. The writer of the selected manuscript will receive a $3,000 prize and a publishing contract. The deadline for entries is October 31, and there is no fee to enter.
  • endingbutton_4 DEATH IN THE MOUTH is accepting horror prose submissions from BIPOC and other ethnically marginalized artists and writers from around the world. Submissions should be 1,000-6,000 words, and accepted contributors will be paid $0.08/word. Submissions are due by November 1. They’re also accepting submissions of portfolios.
  • endingbutton_4 WildStar Press is accepting submissions for its upcoming comics anthology Songs of the Sea. The black and white comic anthology will feature original fiction about pirates and what calls them to the throes of piracy. Submissions will close on November 1.
  • Bitch Magazine is accepting submissions with the theme “touch” until November 7.
  • button_new3 (New York, NY) Grove Atlantic is seeking an Editorial Assistant to the Editorial Director. Apply by November 12 for consideration.
  • LampLight, a quarterly magazine of Dark Fiction, is accepting submissions from writers who have not yet had their first professional sale of a story. Submit your works by November 15 for consideration.
  • Submissions to We’re Here: The Best Queer Speculative Fiction 2021 for Queer short fiction reprints from 2021 are open until December 31.
  • Transmogrify! is accepting submissions of stories about literally magical trans and non-binary teens as written by figuratively magical trans and non-binary authors. One or two stories will be selected from submissions and will be featured within the anthology, to be published by HarperTeen in Summer 2023. Submit by January 14, 2022 at 11:59pm PT for consideration.
