Awards

The Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award for 2018 is accepting nominations through April 20.

The 2018 Toronto Book Awards is open for submissions of books featuring Toronto content published between June 1, 2017 and May 31, 2018 through April 30. Ebooks and self-published works are not eligible.

The Little, Brown Emerging Artist Award is accepting applications through May 15. Submit mock-ups of picture books featuring a diverse narrative for a chance to receive $1500 in American Express giftcards, a round trip ticket to New York, and a one-day mentorship with Little, Brown Books for Young Readers’ professional children’s book design and editorial team and distinguished Artist Mentor Grace Lin.

Crowdfunded Projectskugali

The Kugali Anthology is raising funds on Kickstarter for its production and fulfillment. The Kugali Anthology will feature over 200 full-color pages of comics based on stories from African oral tradition by creators from Africa and the African diaspora. Two editions are available: The Regular edition for an all-ages audience, and the Raki edition for mature readers. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, mumu juju pidgin flash cards, prints, and more. The Kickstarter ends on March 28.


toronto

TO Comic Press is running a Kickstarter to fund its anthology Toronto Comics: Osgoode As Gold celebrating local comic newcomers and veterans. The book will feature over 220 pages of full-color comics from over 50 Toronto creators. Tier options include digital and physicl copies of the book, prints, an enamel pin, copies of every book produced by Toronto Comics, commissions, and more. The Kickstarter ends on March 30.


words

Words & Pictures – A Community Print Shop in VT! is raising funds on Kickstarter to help them purchase the equipment needed to complete the space. Words & Pictures will fulfill the needs of the growing comics community in Essex County, VT, while also providing low-cost access to graphic arts and DIY publishing tools for the community. Tier options for this Kickstarter include works from the VT comics community, including comics by Heather Farrington, prints by Iona Fox, t-shirts printed by Andy Kolovos, and more. There’s even an option to get a private screenprinting class for yourself and three friends. The Kickstarter ends on April 4.


lemonade

The all-ages graphic novel Lemonade Summer by Gabi Mendez: Queer-Friendly LGBTQ Stories is currently raising funds on Kickstarter for its production. The book will feature 136 full-color pages of 5 short stories following the characters’ development with a monochromatic color scheme mirroring the sun from noon to dusk. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, a digital wallpaper, postcards, posters, signed bookplates, and more. The Kickstarter ends on April 7.

The fourth volume of the Chubby Anthology LGBTQ Comic is currently raising funds on Kickstarter for its production. The Chubby Anthology is an inclusive body-positive collection of short comics and illustrations, and its fourth volume focuses on outer space. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book and its previous issues, digital wallpapers, enamel pins, postcards, a sketchbook, stickers, and more. The Kickstarter ends on April 8.


fauna

Illustrator and toy designer Ashley Benson is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce their scented Fauna Fruits: Strawbunny Plush Toy. The Fauna Fruits collection includes 10 animals featuring Strawbunny as the debut plush and two additional plushes obtainable through stretch goals. Each toy purchased through the Kickstarter will include a birth certificate so that recipients can give their plush its own birthday and name. Tier options include the plush toy, enamel pins, and a digital print. The Kickstarter ends on April 8.


General

The Comic Tea Party is a weekly book club for webcomics. Participate in the Discord chat weekly on Thursdays at 5pm to 7pm PST. Sign your comic up for a chance to have it read and discussed in the group!

Comics, Illustration, and More

  • Tabloid Art Zine is seeking submissions of words and/or images exploring the relationship between contemporary culture and art history until March 25. Contributors will not be paid and the zine will be available online for free.
  • Light Grey Art Lab is accepting applications from artists for their upcoming exhibit “Foodies” through March 26.
  • ZapCreatives is hosting an Easter Design challenge through March 26. Design a wooden charm and enter for a chance to win a £250 credit for ZapCreatives.
  • StArt Faire is accepting comics, light novels, articles, tutorials, and ads for their 25th issue through March 29.
  • 24 Panels is accepting submissions of 24 panels or less from comic artists through March 31. They’re also seeking a comics editor! Proceeds will be donated to the mental health care of survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire.
  • GJB Publishing is accepting applications from illustrators who live with mental health issues for Colours of the Mind through March 31.
  • Jacques Nyemb is accepting pitches for NOWZine, focusing on contemporary topics and ultimately serving as an illustrated “time capsule” of our times, through March 31.
  • The Silent Manga Audition‘s 9th competition event is accepting submissions through March 31. This SMA has a limit of 16 pages or less and a choice of three themes to select from. Comic submissions should be silent and without dialogue.
  • The Webcomic Almanac is accepting submissions of promotional art from webcomic creators through March 31.
  • Dirty Diamonds is accepting proposals from women and femmes for the 9th issue “Being” through April 6.
  • Cicada is seeking comics, essays, fiction, and poetry on the theme of family. Submit by April 13 for consideration.
  • Haunted Cosmos Press is accepting submissions from queer artists for Strange Waters: A Queer Aquatic Fantasy Comic Anthology through April 15. Creators will be paid $50 per page, with bonuses possible following Kickstarter funding. Up to 12 black and white or grayscale pages will be permitted per creative team.
  • The Lauren Child Poetry Illustration Prize is accepting submissions from illustrators age 18-25 through May 1. Illustrate a poem by a Betjeman Poetry Prize finalist for a chance to win £1000.
  • The European Comic Schools Contest 2018 is accepting submissions of illustrations and one-shot comics from students of European schools teaching comics, digital art, and/or illustration. Entries are due May 10. Winners may win 200-1000 €, a Wacom Intuos tablet, and copies of Clip Studio Paint.

Conventions and Events

Con or Bust has free tickets available for people of color for a number of upcoming conventions, including the SFWA Nebua Conference, the Locus Awards weekend, and WorldCon 76! Con or Bust is accepting items and services for their 2018 auction, which will run from April 8 – April 22 and help fund Con or Bust’s mission for the next 12 months. Consider donating or bidding to help people of color get to cool SF/F cons!

  • blerDCon (July 27-29) is accepting applications for vendor and artist tables.
  • The Dash Grant is accepting applications from artists attending Short Run 2018 through March 28. Recipients will receive $250, a free table at the event, free access to the Fogland Studios silkscreen co-op (with optional instruction), mentorship from a Short Run guest, and will have their artwork featured at Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery.
  • Artist Alley tables are available for HeroesCon 2018.
  • MegaCon Orlando (May 24-27) is accepting applications for artists ad exhibitors.
  • The Mississauga Comic Expo 2018 is accepting applications for exhibitors.
  • Universal Fan Con is accepting applications for vendors.

(Salem, MA) Page Street Publishing is seeking an Associate Designer for their Page Street Kids line.

(New York, NY) Penguin Random House is seeking a designer or senior designer to work primarily with the Avery, TarcherPerigee, and Berkley imprints.

(Boulder, CO) Roost Books, an imprint of Shambhala Publications, is looking for an Art Director.

Mentorships & Fellowships

Helioscope’s Mentorship Program is accepting public applications through March 31. The Mentorship Program offers cartoonists early in their career the opportunity to learn from established writers and artists in Portland, Oregon.

Disabled Writers is offering a paid fellowship through The Daily Dot through April 15. Selected writers will contribute three pieces in collaboration with an editor.

Pineapple Street Media is offering their first-ever Pineapple Fellowship for underrepresented voices in podcasting. Fellows receive a stipend of $3000 a month and work as a full-time producer in Brooklyn. Apply by April 15 for consideration.

The Representation Matters Mentorship Program is accepting applications on a rolling basis from self-identified people of color interested in the publishing industry. Mentorships will last 6 months, with a minimum of one session every two months.


Residencies, Retreats, and Workshops

The Boston Public Library Writer-in-Residence Program is accepting applications from emerging children’s writers until April 5. The selected writer will receive a $20,000 stipend and office space at the BPL’s Central Library in Copley Square.

Scholarships, Sponsorships, and Grants

  • The Dash Grant is accepting applications from artists attending Short Run 2018 through March 28. Recipients will receive $250, a free table at the event, free access to the Fogland Studios silkscreen co-op (with optional instruction), mentorship from a Short Run guest, and will have their artwork featured at Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery.
  • The Creators for Creators Grant for $30,000 is accepting applications from single artists or writer/artist duos to support the creation of original comics work. Applications will be accepted through March 31.
  • The Older Writers Grant is accepting submissions from writers of speculative fiction over 50 through March 31.
  • The Restless Books Prize for New Immigrant Writing is accepting submissions of completed fiction manuscripts from first-generation residents of their country through March 31. Recipients will receive a $10,000 advance and publication by Restless Books.
  • The Still I Rise Grant for Black American women writers is accepting applications through April 30. Recipients will receive $100 and publication opportunities from Alternating Current Press.
  • The Noemi Press Book Awards for poetry and prose are accepting submissions through May 1. Two prizes of $1000 each will be given to award recipients.
  • The Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color Award is accepting applications through June 15. The recipient will receive $1500 to assist them in career and writing development.
  • The John Locher Memorial Award is accepting applications from political cartoonists aged 18-25 through June 15. The recipient will receive $1000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the annual Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.
  • Western Washington primary and secondary school educators and librarians are invited to apply for the C4C3 Grant to bring more graphic novels and comics into the educational process.

  • GJB Publishing is accepting applications from writers who live with mental health issues for Headspace: Mental Health and the Creative Mind through March 31.
  • Literary Magazine Tin House has open submissions for their Spring 2019 issue through March 31.
  • Cicada is seeking comics, essays, fiction, and poetry on the theme of family. Submit by April 13 for consideration.
  • NineStar Press is accepting submissions of romantic fiction with the theme “LOST.” Submissions are due April 30.
  • Parvus Press is seeking submissions of science fiction and fantasy from writers of color through April 30.
  • Lethe Press is seeking submissions of short stories featuring gay men in the 18th and 19th centuries for The Decadents until May.
  • Black from the Future: A Black Speculative Fiction Anthology is accepting submissions through June 30.
  • (NSFW!) Cleis Press is accepting submissions for their first volume of Best Bondage Volume of the Year through July 1. Selected authors will receive $75 and two copies of the published book. Cleis Press is also accepting submissions for the Best Women’s Erotica of the Year Volume 5 through August 1. Selected submissions will be published and their writers will receive $200 and 2 copies of the published book.

Youth

(Burbank, CA) DC Comics is hiring an Editorial Administrative Intern for Summer 2018.

The Walrus is accepting submissions of short stories of less than 3000 words from Canadian writers age 13-17 for their Youth Author Award through March 30. The winner will receive $5000 and a mentorship lunch with The Walrus editors.

Tor Teen’s Anger Is A Gift essay contest is accepting written submissions from people aged 13 and older through April 30. Winners will receive $5000, have their essay published in Teen Ink, and receive a signed copy of Anger Is A Gift.

Miss Anthology is accepting submissions of up to 10 pages from female and/or LGBTQIA+ comic creators age 9-18 living in the Pacific Northwest through May 1.

Comics Club highlights and connects comic clubs and shares advice and resources to help youth comic creators.

Natalie “Tally” Nourigat offers advice & resources for young cartoonists ages 14-18 (although this is good advice for creators at any age)!
