News

• If you follow Paper Cat Press on WordPress, the emails you receive when I post may wind up in your Spam folders, even if you check the emails every week. Be sure to check, and mark as “Not Spam”! I will create a new mailing list in April soon that will hopefully address this.
• SPX has created a legal aid fund in support of 11 indie artists and an indie publisher who are faced with a defamation lawsuit because they spoke out against another creator’s alleged pattern of sexual abuse. Please support their cause and send the message that survivors of sexual assault do not feel afraid to speak out against their abusers and supporters of victims should not pay for an abuser’s crimes.

Awards

The Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation Through Adversity is accepting applications from US libraries and staff who overcome adversity and create lasting innovative community service programs that successfully inspire and connect with new readers. A $10,000 cash award will be given to a US library, and four runners-up will receive $1,000 in Penguin Random House books.

The Ladies of Horror Fiction Awards is accepting submissions of works of horror created by women (cis or trans) until December 31. The awards will be announced in 2020.

The Ripped Bodice Awards for Excellence in Romantic Fiction will announce its winners on February 14, 2020. While there is no formal submissions process and judges are tasked with making note of memorable romance fiction, you are welcome to submit your work for consideration.

Crowdfunded Projects

 NSFW! Tab Kimpton is currently raising funds to produce Come Together: A European Anthology of Erotic Comics. The 180-page full-color comic anthology features 13 erotic stories based on the theme of “reunion.” Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, a book signed by all contributors, and commissions. The Kickstarter ends on August 31.

 Lucy Kagan is currently raising funds to produce the fourth issue in witchy anthology series Hazel: A Witches’ Lifestyle Zine, Issue IV: Ritual. The full-color book features the comics, prose, artwork, and how-tos on the theme of Ritual, all inspired by finding magic in the everyday, personal growth, and building friendships. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, PDFs of past issues, stickers, prints, wooden pins, and commissions. The Kickstarter ends on August 31.

 ComixCentral is currently raising funds to produce ComixCentral Presents: The Best of Indie Anthology 2019. The all-ages anthology features 15 stories told in over 100 pages of comics created by 28 creators located worldwide. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the comic, a t-shirt, a full-page ad in the book, and a digital ad on ComixCentral.com. The Kickstarter ends on September 1.

 Eddy Hedington is currently raising funds to produce Monster Mashup Comic Anthology. The 152-page comic anthology features 21 stories by 47 creators that feature monsters from the public domain mashed up with other creatures from legends and lore. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book and an 11×17″ print. The Kickstarter ends on September 1.

Caytlin Vilbrandt is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Tamberlane Chapter 3. After a human child named Tamberlane winds up in the care of bat Belfry, the animal citizens of Treehollow work to unravel the mysteries of their ward in this PG13 LGBTQIA+ created comic. Tier options include digital and physical copies ofChapter 3, digital and physical copies of chapters 1 and 2, a print, a sticker, a signed bookplate, and a personalized sketch. The Kickstarter ends on September 4.

Morrighan Corbel is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Giclée Prints of “The Place That Isn’t.” Inspired by a local cottage, the piece being printed is an homage to “quiet, dilapidated places that exist in a world that takes value only from commercial gain.” Tier options include digital prints, giclée prints, and hand-embellished giclée prints. The Kickstarter ends on September 4.

Robyn Chapman is currently raising funds to publish American Cult: A Comics Anthology. The anthology, consisting of about 180 black-and-white pages of comics, covers various cults in the United States through a journalistic and humanizing lens. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the anthology,  postcard, special author bundles featuring additional content created by contributors, and more. The Kickstarter ends on September 6.

King Skull Comics is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish Strange Encounters. The 64-page full-color anthology features magic, mystery, and supernatural adaptations of prose and completely original comics. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book and a print. The Kickstarter ends on September 6.

Lindsay Moore of Hellcat Press is currently raising funds to produce Dark Lady Returns: A Horrifying Anthology. The anthology features all-female contributors with over 200 pages of original horror comics. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, a digital obituary, a print, Hellcat Press’s previous anthologies, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on September 10.

Abi is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce a set of pride-themed cowboy hat enamel pins. Following the success of a sticker set with the same artwork, Abi decided to produce enamel pins, seeking to expand the flags represented with crowdsourced funding. Tier options include up to four enamel pins and the option of stickers. The Kickstarter ends on September 13.

Let’s Make Comics!, a Chicago-based comic collective, is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce This Makes Me Sad: A Short Comics Anthology. Featuring 48 pages of black-and-white comics, the anthology focuses on sadness, grief, and depression, and what can come of those expressions. Tier options include digital and physical copies of This Makes Me Sad, copies of past anthologies by the collective, a button, and a print. The Kickstarter ends on September 15.

 Jordaan Arledge of Arledge Comics is currently running a “Break Kickstarter” crowdfunding campaign for the production of Alex Priest: Issue Five – The Finale.  As the story of demon slayer Alex Priest and scientific Janelle Garcia comes to a close, backers have the opportunity to sway the plot – vote “Heroes” to keep the heroes alive, or “Villains” to end the life of a hero in this final comic. Tier options include digital and physical copies of Issue 5, digital and physical copies of previous issues, alternate covers you can vote with, trading cards, enamel pins, and prints. The Kickstarter ends on September 8.

 Taneka Stotts is currently raising funds for the production of Elements: Earth, a comic anthology by creators of color. The all-ages LGBTQ+ friendly comic anthology feature 272 pages of black and white comics (with a Pantone spot color) inspired by the theme of “earth.” Tier options include digital and physical copies of the anthology, a wallpaper pack, a bookplate, postcards, an enamel pin, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on September 9.

 Ru Xu is currently raising funds on Kickstarter for the production of Appeal! Pilot. Previously shared in illustrations, concept work, and other art, this pilot finally introduces the werewolf lawyer Loyal and vampire Azhar in comic form and the start of their relationship. Tier options include digital and physical copies of Appeal! Pilot, a print set, a trio charm, a signed bookplate, a silkscreen print, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on September 13.

 Rem and Bikkuri are currently raising funds for the publishing of Devil’s Candy – Book 1. Devil’s Candy is a horror-themed action/comedy comic for teens that follows Kazu Decker after he constructs the human-like Pandora for a science project and brings her to school. Tier options include digital and physical copies of Book 1, a digital and physical art books, a digital wallpaper, and a stationery set. The Kickstarter ends on September 14.

 Payton F is currently raising funds to publish Help Wanted: Volume One. Help Wanted is an LGBT romantic dramedy that follows Anne Black, a recent college grad new to Minneapolis who just started work as a live-in caretaker. While she gets to know the staff and tenants, she fails to realize the house’s inhabitants are all supernatural! Tier options include digital and physical copies of Help Wanted: Volume One, postcards, buttons, original artwork, and a vinyl sticker. The Kickstarter ends on September 14.

 Beehive Books is currently raising funds to translate and publish Artemisia: The Original Painter of Women in Power in English. Originally published in French, this graphic novel biography explores the life of Artemisia Gentileschi, a woman who “reinterpreted biblical and mythological scenes through a lens of female agency and empowerment” and lived off the success of her works. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, signed and numbered editions, a bookmark, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on September 17.

 Enkidu Studios is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish Modern Mythology: The Hero’s Journey. The comic and art anthology features over 160 pages and 17 stories by 29 creators, along with facts about the story’s original myth, cultural influences, and more. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, prints, Enkidu Studios’ past two books, original artwork, and more. The Kickstarter ends on September 19.

 The Starlight City Project is currently raising funds to publish R:ILPERSONA Volume 2: High Places & Principalities. R:ILPERSONA takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth where technology and black magic have united into a force known as “The Ether.” Two opposing factors are fighting an all-out war – and in the middle of it, assassin Rane loses his memory and must learn all over again who is an enemy and what he must do. Tier options include digital and physical copies of volumes one and two, stickers, alternate covers, prints, and more. The Kickstarter ends on September 19.

General

Jaleesa Rosario of the University of Michigan is looking for Black creators and creators of color who do business online as artists to fill out an anonymized survey. Participants will receive a small stipend for their time.

The Kurodahan Press Translation Prize is accepting entries until end of day September 30, Japan time. The grand prize winner will receive a cash prize of 30,000 yen and a contract for publication for an additional payment to the winner.

• Catapult magazine is accepting applications for a paid, full-time, four month-long editorial fellow until September 6. The selected fellow will work in the Catapult office in New York City starting in September or early October.
• The Tulsa Artist Fellowship is accepting applications until September 6. Selected fellows receive a one-year, unrestricted $20,000 award, fully subsidized housing and studio space in Downtown Tulsa’s Arts and Greenwood Districts, a relocation package, and more.
• The Asian American Writers’ Workshop is accepting applications for the 2020 Margins Fellowship until September 9. Four emerging Asian American, Muslim, and Arab writers of fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction based in New York City aged 30 and under will receive $5,000, residency time at the Millay Colony for the Arts, mentorship, access to the AAWW writing space, and publication opportunities in our online magazine, The Margins.

•  The Hinge Arts Residency in Fergus Falls, Minnesota is accepting applications from artists until September 1.
•  The Ucross Foundation Residency Program is accepting applications for its Spring residencies until September 1. There is a $40 application fee and $50 deposit, but residents will not be charged for room, board, or studio space, and are not expected to deliver anything at the end of the residency.
• The 2020 Artist’s Residency at the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle, Cornwall, UK is accepting applications from artists until October 31.

• The Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo is offering six $75 mini-grants to its exhibitors. Apply by September 22 for consideration.

• The Awesome Foundation offers $1000 grants on a rolling basis.
• Black Rainbow offers microgrants of $300 to LGBQTI people of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community that includes $200 to assist with hosting Indigenous LGBTQI community events.
• The Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism is accepting applications from artists on a rolling basis. Writers can be immigrants in any country, but stories should reference or involve America. •  The Aurtistic Zine is accepting submissions from autistic individuals and their immediate families, aged 6 and up, residing in Southern California until September 1. The theme for the upcoming zine issue is “perception.”
