News

• If you follow Paper Cat Press on WordPress, the emails you receive when I post may wind up in your Spam folders, even if you check the emails every week. Be sure to check, and mark as “Not Spam”! I will create a new mailing list in April soon that will hopefully address this.
• ComixCentral is shutting down on October 31.
• Crunchyroll and Webtoon have announced a strategic partnership that aims to develop and co-produce content. I’m so excited to see webcomics get animated!
• Paypal will no longer return processing fees (2.9% + $0.30) when you refund customers.
• Supporters of Kickstarter United can look to this page for ideas on how to show their support. NOTE: Paper Cat Press supports the union and will follow their lead in the use of Kickstarter.
• On October 2, Kickstarter United (the KSRU) requested voluntary recognition of their union. Backers and creators of Kickstarter campaigns have been voicing their support.
•  Kickstarter has recently fired two of its employees who were leaders in the effort to form a union at the company. Since interim CEO Aziz Hasan took over in March of this year, employees have experienced a number of retaliatory actions against efforts to unionize, outlined in this article by April Glaser.
• SPX has created a legal aid fund in support of 11 indie artists and an indie publisher who are faced with a defamation lawsuit because they spoke out against another creator’s alleged pattern of sexual abuse. Please support their cause and send the message that survivors of sexual assault do not feel afraid to speak out against their abusers and supporters of victims should not pay for an abuser’s crimes.

Awards

The Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation Through Adversity is accepting applications from US libraries and staff who overcome adversity and create lasting innovative community service programs that successfully inspire and connect with new readers. A $10,000 cash award will be given to a US library, and four runners-up will receive $1,000 in Penguin Random House books.

The 2020 Excellence in Graphic Literature Award is accepting applications for Jurors and the Advisory Board until November 1.

 The 47th Annual Annie Awards are accepting submissions until November 1 at 5PM PST.

The Lambda Literary Awards are accepting entries until November 15. There is an entrance fee of $55.

The 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards is accepting submissions until November 27 (6PM PST). Each submission requires a separate entry form and a $100 processing fee payable to GLAAD; reduced fees or hardship waivers can be requested. More information about submissions can be found here.

The Ladies of Horror Fiction Awards is accepting submissions of works of horror created by women (cis or trans) until December 31. The awards will be announced in 2020.

The Ladies Do Comics Award is accepting submissions of long form graphic novels in process from women in the UK. Digital forms must be submitted by January 5, 2020 and printed books must be received by January 26, 2020.

The Ripped Bodice Awards for Excellence in Romantic Fiction will announce its winners on February 14, 2020. While there is no formal submissions process and judges are tasked with making note of memorable romance fiction, you are welcome to submit your work for consideration.

The Myriad First Graphic Novel Competition is accepting submissions of graphic novels in process from creators who have not yet published a full-length graphic work until February 28, 2020.

Crowdfunded Projects

 Illustrator and comic artist Mazie is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish Home Sweet Home. The autobiographical comic anthology features 14 creators whose explorations of the theme of “home” compose the saddle-stitched book. Tier options include digital and physical copies of Home Sweet Home, a sticker, a bookmark, and original artwork. The Kickstarter ends on October 30.

Taneka Stotts and Camila Fortuna are currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Killer Looks: an Enamel Pin Set. These enamel pins feature killer designs of weaponry and weighted stares, with more designs unlocked as the project’s pledge total increases. Tier options include the pins themselves, stickers, and prints. The Kickstarter ends on November 2.

Memokkeen is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Invisible Illness: Depression. The anthology features more than 70 pages of comics, illustrations and creative writing that confront the experience of depression and how it affects those who experience it. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, digital and physical copies of Invisible Illness: Anxiety, stickers, and a tote bag. The campaign ends on November 6.

NSFW! Fortuna Media is currently raising funds to produce Book of Shadows: BUFFOMET. This hardcover art book celebrates delicious, demonic decadence and erotica with spot color printing and the contributions of over 40 LGBTQ+ artists. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, a poster insert, and an enamel pin. The Kickstarter ends on November 6.

Power and Magic Press is currently raising funds to produce Power & Magic: The Queer Witch Anthology Volume 2. This anthology features over 200 pages of black-and-white young adult comics starring queer witches of color. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, digital and physical copies of Power & Magic: Volume 1, as well as the other books from Power and Magic Press, a bookplate, a sketch card, and an enamel pin. The Kickstarter ends on November 9.

Mariah Currey is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to publish Rainy Day Dreams Book 1. To quote the campaign page, “Rainy Day Dreams is a queer-friendly, character-driven supernatural drama about relationships, monsters, and defeating evil with kindness.” Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, and other digital and physical comics by Mariah. The campaign ends on November 8.

 Illustrator Geneva Benton is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce AstroLadies Enamel Pins. Inspired by her own past illustrations, Geneva’s collection of enamel pins feature confident women and themes of space and exploration. Tier options include enamel pins and foil prints. The campaign ends on November 12.

 Bones McKay and Ursula Gray are currently raising funds on Kickstarter to produce Moonlight: A Queer Werewolf Anthology. More than twenty queer creators contributed short stories and comics to this anthology about queer werewolves. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book. The campaign ends on November 12.

 Arledge Comics is currently raising funds to produce Strange Waters. The black and white comic anthology features fifteen stories, all with the unifying theme of queer expression and water. Tier options include digital and physical copies of the book, an enamel pin, a pirate flag, and other Arledge Comics titles. The Kickstarter ends on November 18.

 Carnation Books is currently raising funds to publish The Queer Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Composed of queer, transformative explorations of the Sherlock Holmes universe, the anthology features nine authors well-known for their work in fanfiction. Tier options include digital and paperback copies of the book and a limited-edition dust jacket. The campaign ends on November 18.

• Abelle, the creator of the #DrawingWhileBlack hashtag, has created a directory of artists. Please add your name if you are a Black artist!
• If you’re a Filipino artist, add your name to the Filipino American Artist Directory!
• inQluded is accepting nominations of awesome, inspiring QTIBIPoC people for features in their magazine and platform.
• Jaleesa Rosario of the University of Michigan is looking for Black creators and creators of color who do business online as artists to fill out an anonymized survey. Participants will receive a small stipend for their time.
• The Latinx Collective shared a directory of Latina and Latinx small business owners and collectives. Check it out!
• LGBTQube is seeking Artists, Writers, and Content & Product Creators to be paid contributors for an upcoming queer centric subscription book box. Please apply here.

•  Threadless is accepting artwork for the following challenges: Chaos Returns, until November 1; and Secret Society, until November 8.
•  The next #DVPit events will take place on October 28 (kids/YA) and October 29 (adult/#DVArt). Find out more about #DVPit here.
•  Hiraeth is accepting submissions from illustrators until October 28. The art anthology will be paid, but it is not stated how payments will be distributed or measured.
•  Blick is hosting a Pen and Ink Contest celebrating #inktober. Submit your inked works by October 31 for a chance to win a prize pack worth more than $400.

• MediBang Paint is hosting its 1st Jump’s Universal Illustration Contest. • ENBY is accepting pitches from non-binary creators to their fifth issue with the theme “mental health” until November 15. Final works are due December 5.
• Zainab Akhtar has opened submissions for ShortBox until November 22. Submitted comics should be 80-150 pages.
• The ART street Monthly Art competition is accepting entries with the theme “Halloween” until November 29.
• Applications are open for the Girls Who Love Monsters collaborative art and writing anthology until December 1. Applications are accepted from anyone who identifies as a woman.
• The 13th Silent Manga Audition, in collaboration with UNESCO Asia & Pacific Regional Bureau for Education, is accepting submissions of manga-style comics with the theme “together for peace” until January 31, 2020.

•  Smack Mellon’s Artist Studio Program is accepting applications from New York City-based artists until November 1. Selected participants will receive 24/7 access to a 250-300 sq. ft. studio space in Brooklyn, and must use the studio space at least 50 hours per month.

•  The Super Patron Creator Arts Grant, a $50,000 grant for creators who share their work regularly, is accepting applications until November 21.
• The Awesome Foundation offers $1000 grants on a rolling basis.
• Black Rainbow offers microgrants of $300 to LGBQTI people of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community that includes $200 to assist with hosting Indigenous LGBTQI community events.
• The Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism is accepting applications from artists on a rolling basis.
