Crowdfunded Projects

Artist Abi Stevens is raising funds to produce Rest Is For Rebels, a pin collection for the rebellious and ‘unproductive’ anti-capitalist. The pins will be produced on sustainably-sourced wood and manufactured in the UK, where Stevens is located. Reward options include any or all of the pins, mini-prints, and stickers. The campaign ends on July 18.  Gina Biggs is raising funds to publish Love Not Found – Volume 2, collecting chapters 8-14 of the series. In a future world where physical contact has become an outdated concept and embarrassing social faux pas, Abeille and Miel agree to test and experiment with touch following an accidental brush of skin. The series also features a richly developed ensemble cast with multiple LGBTQ+ couples. Love Not Found Volume 2 will contain nearly 300 remastered pages of full-color comics and bonus content including concept art, story notes, and character bios. Campaign rewards include physical and digital copies of Love Not Found Volumes 1 and 2, an NSFW mini-comic, an NSFW art book, a bookmark, a bookplate, a sticker sheet, postcard prints, and more. The campaign ends on July 22.  Comic artist Sharean Morishita is raising funds to publish School Memories: A Comic About Bullying. Colton pranks his classmates because he uses humor to fit in and make friends, but the new girl Echo doesn’t find him very funny. Where is the line drawn between joking, teasing, and bullying? This 30-page comic book is great for 4th-7th graders who are struggling with fitting in and figuring out how to get along with others. Reward options include digital and physical copies of the comic. The campaign ends on July 22.

Caroline Dougherty is raising funds to reprint the HAUS OF CARDS, a deck of cards first printed in 2020. The original artwork featured on each of the face cards is inspired by established lore, symbolism from the traditional English pattern deck, and suit variations in different nations. With each stretch goal met, Dougherty will upgrade the quality of the deck and extras produced as reward options. The reward options for this project include the deck, a Joker card sticker, and prints of the face cards, with a velvet drawstring bag and included Joker card as stretch goals. The campaign ends on July 31.

• Go Komikimok, a collective of SEA creators, is now open. They recently released a series of resources: “The Comic Creator’s Guide to Graphic Novel Pitch Packets” and “The Comic Creator’s Guide to Literary Agents.“
• Abelle, the creator of the #DrawingWhileBlack hashtag, has moved the directory to AirTable. Please add your name if you are a Black artist!

• The results of the Comics Workforce Study 2019 is now available. Thank you Sasha Bassett for all of your work in collecting and parsing this data!
• The Kyoto International Manga Anime Award is accepting submissions of comics from applicants who wish to be a manga artist or illustrator who makes a professional debut in Japan until July 26. Illustrators, submit here with your work themed “Travel to Kyoto.” Prizes include cash, an invite to the Kyoto International Anime Manga Fair (KYO-MAF), your work displayed at KYO-MAF, and a recommendation to all participating editorial departments in the Manga Business Trip Editorial Department at KYO-MAF.
• The Silent Manga Audition is accepting textless comic entries between 5 and 17 pages in length with the theme “moments of fear, joy or love” until July 28.
• Wizards in Space is accepting submissions of writing, illustration, and short comics for its upcoming 7th issue with the theme “bridges and barriers” until July 30. Creators of accepted works will be paid, but they do not state how much.
• Bluestockings is accepting submissions of zines for consignment throughout the month of July.
• The Sequentials team invites scholars, artists, and critics to submit original visual scholarship on any academic, social, or artistic subject. Submissions may be of any length and may be either a large, single image or a series of “pages” to be displayed sequentially. Submissions will be accepted until July 31.
• EMANATA is seeking young adult graphic novel submissions from agents representing comic artists living in Canada until August 30. Deaf and Disabled, POC, and 2SLGBTQIA+ creators are encouraged to submit with or without an agent.
• Quindrie Press is accepting submissions for its 2022 comic collection until August 31. They’re seeking pitches for 36-40 page comics, complete creative teams based in the UK (with priority given to Scottish artists), and pitches from people with all sorts of comic experience.
• WildStar Press is accepting pitch submissions (short stories or graphic novels; all genres; middle grade and older) until August 31. Conventions and Events

Many conventions and major events have been cancelled due to travel restrictions, guest cancellations, and preventative responses to the spread of coronavirus. Here is a list of cancelled and postponed conventions. Please check in frequently with any event you have planned through 2021. And, as always, wash your hands.

• CAKE, the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo, has been postponed until a proposed date of June 2022.
• The Comics Studies Society is hosting its fourth annual conference on Re/Building Community from August 6 to August 7. Registration is free, though donations are encouraged.
• The Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) will take place December 10-12 in 2021. 
• Emerald City Comic Con has rescheduled its event for December 2-5, 2021.
• FIYAH Con will take place September 16-September 19. Registration is now open and will close on August 31.
• Flame Con 2021 will take place online August 21–22.
• MICE (the Massachusetts Independent Comics Festival) will have neither a virtual nor in-person show this year. However, they will hold an outdoors in-person Mini-Mice on August 28-29 in Cambridge, MA, as well as a Mini-Grant Showcase with applications due September 1.
• Black speculative fiction writers can email events [at] sfwa.org for instructions on how to claim a free registration for the 2021 Nebula Conference Online.
• The New York Queer Zine Fest (October 16) is accepting applications for its event at Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library at 10 Grand Army Plaza. NYQZF is open to the public and offers free admission and is wheelchair accessible. Applications will be accepted until end of day Saturday, July 31.
• Sakura-Con 2021 has been cancelled. Memberships for 2021 will be forwarded to 2022.
• San Diego Comic-Con has postponed its in-person event. Instead, the online event Comic-Con@Home will take place July 23-25. They recently announced a smaller in-person event, Comic-Con Special Edition, on Thanksgiving (US) weekend November 26-28. Read their statement regarding the event here.
• The ShortBox Comics Fair will take place online from October 1-October 31.
• Short Run Comix and Arts Festival has been postponed. The Short Run Dash Grant is now on hold.
• Small Press Expo (SPX) 2021 will be held virtually.
• The Spectrum Art Market, a seasonal outdoor market occurring every 2nd Saturday from June-October, is accepting applications from LGBTQIA+ artists living in Portland.

• Light Grey Art Lab’s travel-based residencies are now accepting applications on a first-come, first-served basis. Although these residencies sound incredible, they do not come with stipends or scholarships.
• ViciousMinutesHour is accepting applications from Black Trans folk for two Artist-in-Residence positions. The artist-in-residence opportunity pays $225 CDN per week and serves as a space/time grant, providing an additional source of income for the general work applicants do as an artist.

• The Covid-19 Aid Funds website lists funding opportunities.
• The Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism is accepting applications from artists on a rolling basis. Artists covering data privacy, the 2018/2020 elections, the role of technology in society, political influence campaigns, harmful technologies, countering disinformation, and artificial intelligence may receive $500 to $5,000 in grants.
• Gumroad’s Creators Fund is accepting applications on a rolling basis. Gumroad will be allocating $50,000 in creative grants of $500 to $5,000 throughout the year.

Writing and Editing

•  Uncanny Magazine is seeking a Nonfiction Editor and strongly encourages BIPOC, Disabled, and LGBTQIA+ folks to apply. Applicants should have a deep love and knowledge of science fiction and fantasy, and ideally have some experience in editorial work and publishing. The position will begin in August 2021, and will run for six issues/a year with possibility for renewal. There is a modest stipend for this position. Apply by July 19 for consideration.
• The Analog Award for Emerging Black Voices is accepting hard sci-fi submissions of 1,000 to 5,000 words until July 23. Applicants should be writers over 18 who customarily identify Black, have not published and are not under contract for a book, and have three or less paid publications (additional unpaid publications okay). Analog editors commit to purchasing and publishing the winning story in Analog Science Fiction and Fact, with the intent of creating a lasting relationship, including one year of monthly mentorship sessions.
• Passionfruit is a newsletter made by and for LGBTQ+ Asians/diasporic Asians in the USA. Sent through the post to your mailbox, this project follows the tradition of queer newsletters and periodicals of the 70s-80s. They are seeking submissions of political and personal writing on queer Asian issues and lived experience, ranging from personal essays, to poetry, to news from your community. Submissions are open until July 25. All contributors will be able to receive a physical newsletter.
• The Ann Petry Award is accepting submissions of previously unpublished prose, either a novel or a collection of short stories or novellas, with a minimum of 150 pages, by a Black writer. The awarded manuscript will be published by Red Hen Press, with its writer awarded $3,000, and a four-week residency at The Community Library’s Ernest and Mary Hemingway House in Ketchum, Idaho. Apply by July 30 for consideration.
• Wizards in Space is accepting submissions of writing, illustration, and short comics for its upcoming 7th issue with the theme “bridges and barriers” until July 30. Creators of accepted works will be paid, but they do not state how much.
• Anathema Magazine is accepting submissions from queer/two-spirit African authors for their upcoming special Africa (August 2021) issue until July 31. They pay $100 CAD for fiction & $50 for poetry.
• Apex Magazine is accepting submissions from Indigenous authors for its upcoming Indigenous Futurists issue edited by Alison Mills. Submissions are open until July 31. Guidelines for submissions are the same as general submission guidelines. Allison Mills will read all submissions and make publication choices, but stories rejected by Allison will still be eligible for general submission to Apex Magazine. Apex Magazine pays $0.08/word.
• FIYAH Lit Mag is accepting prose and poetry submissions with the theme Love, Death, and Androids until July 31.
• Submissions are now open for the New Voices Award and the New Visions Award from Lee & Low Books. Winners of each award receive a $2,000 cash prize and a first time publishing contract with Lee & Low Books. Both writing contests are open to writers of color and Indigenous/Native writers who are residents of the United States and who have not previously had a children’s picture book published (for the New Voices Award), or have had a middle grade or young adult novel published (for the New Visions Award). Submissions are due by July 31.
• Charlesbridge and TERC are seeking new picture book manuscripts for their “Storytelling Math” series. They are interested only in realistic, contemporary fiction featuring human characters of color, and are particularly interested in #ownvoices manuscripts by BIPOC authors. Manuscripts under 500 words work best for this series. Submit by August 1 for consideration.
• Flame Tree Publishing is accepting submissions from writers of East, South or Southeast Asian heritage for upcoming anthology Asian Ghost Short Stories until August 1. Word length is most likely to be successful at 2000–4000 words, but stories slightly outside this range will still be read.
• Xenocultivars: Stories of Queer Growth is accepting submissions of completed speculative stories on the theme of plants and growth, featuring queer characters, written in English until August 7 at 9pm Pacific.
• Violet Gaze Press is now accepting submissions for its Monster Love anthology. Story should be between 15k and 20k words, and must be romance (all steam levels okay) with a HEA/HFN. Submissions are due August 12.
• Blair Publishing is accepting submissions of full manuscripts for the Lee Smith Novel Prize until September 1. The winner will receive $1,000 and publication.
• Wax Nine’s first annual Chapbook Contest is open to submissions of poetry or hybrid poetry manuscripts between 25-50 pages (max 50, including front/back matter). The winning manuscript will be selected by editor Sadie Dupuis and published by Wax Nine in 2022 in a first run of 125 copies. Chapbooks will be perfect-bound, laid out by designer Caitlin Bechtel, and printed locally in Philadelphia at Fireball Printing. The winner will receive 20 free copies, a $250 advance, and split royalties on copies sold by Wax Nine. Future printings will be determined based on demand between author and Wax Nine. Submissions will stay open until September 1. There is no submission fee. Finalists will be notified in early November with a winner announced by early December.
• Karen Strong is seeking an unagented, previously unpublished Black writer to contribute a short story for the young-adult anthology COOL. AWKWARD. BLACK. This anthology will be published in Spring 2023 by Penguin Young Readers with a list of bestselling and critically acclaimed Black authors. The submissions call will close on September 15 at 11:59PM EST. Submissions must include a short story of 5,000 words or less, a bio (150 words or less) about you and how you identify as part of the Black/African diaspora, and a photo/headshot. The selected contributor will be published and credited in the anthology and will receive $3,000.
• Nerve Endings: Smut and Nerve Endings: Romance are accepting submissions of short fiction addressing trans and non-binary experiences of sex, sexuality, and relationships. Submissions for Romance are due by October 4 (extended).
• The Barbellion Prize is accepting submissions of books published between November 2020 and October 31, 2021 until October 31. Eligibility for the prize is predicated on the author’s presentation of life with a long-term chronic illness or disability, whether that be in the form of blindness, MS, cystic fibrosis, dwarfism, or another comparable condition that may substantially define one’s life.
